Meta’s Move Fitness Tracker is Disappearing: What You Need to Know!

Summary

  • Meta Quest VR headset losing Move fitness tracking due to lack of user adoption.
  • CTO Andrew Bosworth explained Move app discontinuation after fan backlash.
  • No replacement planned, users advised to explore external fitness tracker options.

As a movie buff, I can tell you that I recently learned about changes coming to my beloved Meta Quest virtual reality headsets. The Move fitness tracking feature is set to disappear, and I’m curious to know why. It seems this isn’t the first adjustment in the Meta Quest system; they’ve also bid farewell to the scoreboard app on the headset.

The built-in fitness application for the Meta VR headset series, known as Move, tracks activities involving hand, head, and full-body movements of players. By analyzing movement data and user information, this app not only records the amount of physical activity a user engages in but also estimates the number of calories burned while using the device. Unfortunately, users were disappointed to hear that the Move app will be shut down shortly.

Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth has given a reason as to why the Move app will no longer be available from March 31st. In a Q&A session, he shared a video addressing a fan’s question about the discontinuation. He expressed regret for this change but explained that not enough Quest users have been utilizing the feature regularly for the company to continue providing support. He mentioned that while there is a dedicated group of fans, their numbers are too small compared to the cost of maintaining the app.

Will Another Meta Quest Fitness Monitor Fill the Void?

It appears that Meta doesn’t seem to be planning on swapping out the Move feature with something else at the moment. But fear not, gamers seeking fitness options with the Meta Quest can explore alternative methods. An external fitness tracker might be a viable choice, while certain fitness games and apps have built-in tracking features as well. However, one significant advantage of the Move app was its ability to sync with users’ phones, displaying their stats on the Oculus app or Apple Health. The absence of this feature could potentially diminish the allure of virtual reality fitness for some users.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but appreciate the innovative spirit that drives Meta in crafting ideas for their product development and additional apps and features for their shipped VR headsets. However, not every concept they cook up ultimately sees the light of day. For instance, rumors suggest that some Meta VR headset prototypes have been axed before they even reached consumers. The Meta Quest Pro, in particular, didn’t quite manage the sales figures that the company had envisioned. Whether any more apps or features on the Quest line will meet a similar fate remains to be seen. Time alone will tell the story.
