Shiny Shoe has unveiled the content strategy for the upcoming game “Monster Train 2“. This strategy includes numerous free updates and a significant expansion in the future. The sequel to the successful indie deckbuilder was initially announced back in February, with PC gamers also receiving a complimentary demo of “Monster Train 2” on Steam at that time.
After the unveiling, an official announcement of the release date was made, confirming that “Monster Train 2” will be available on May 21 for PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X/S. Simultaneously, a fresh trailer was released, showcasing the game’s primary antagonist – the Titans, formidable foes that players must defeat to prevent them from seizing control of Heaven. The original “Monster Train” garnered much praise among roguelike enthusiasts and received positive reviews, creating high anticipation for the sequel right from the beginning.
Ever since its debut, the game Monster Train 2 has garnered a substantial following, surpassing the 500,000 player mark recently. To celebrate this achievement and maintain the excitement, developer Shiny Shoe has revealed a roadmap detailing future updates. The initial update, titled Lost Arsenal, is slated for Q3 of 2025 and will be free. Players of Monster Train 2 can anticipate an infusion of new cards for each clan, fresh equipment for the unaligned, along with rebalanced room and legacy cards. These changes are aimed at introducing more strategic depth and revitalizing gameplay. This is just the start of a three-phase post-launch update plan.
Monster Train 2 Content Roadmap
In the fourth quarter of 2025, we’re anticipating the second update for “Monster Train 2.” As of now, it doesn’t have a title, but it’s set to unveil new Void-related perils, tougher adversaries, innovative gameplay modifiers, strategic items, and an array of cosmetics. In the first quarter of 2026, we’re gearing up for our largest update yet – a blend of free content and a substantial paid expansion. Although specifics are still secret, it will introduce a new game mode, a newly minted clan, and other substantial enhancements. Regular updates for this deckbuilding roguelike game will also include bug fixes, balance adjustments, and localization refinements based on community input.
The newly disclosed plan for Monster Train 2 indicates a wealth of upcoming features, expanding upon an already highly acclaimed base. As I write this, the game boasts almost 96% positive reviews on Steam. Moreover, its current number of simultaneous players stands at 18,503, significantly surpassing the original game’s all-time high of 14,073, which was achieved over more than five years. To add to this success, Monster Train 2 has also ventured into collaborative efforts. In fact, Balatro recently announced a partnership with Monster Train 2.
