At this year’s TennoCon, the closed alpha version of the Fantasy MMORPG Soulframe continues to hide away. Although the developers at Digital Extremes intend to open the beta to more players during this weekend, they are eager to keep Soulframe’s sister game in a secluded state for a while longer.
Great news! They’re about to release a lot of fresh content into Fantasy Land shortly, expanding on their already robust storyline that blends classic fairy tales with modern themes of nature versus technologically advanced intruders.
If you have registered for an account on Soulframe’s website up until this moment or plan to do so over the weekend from July 19th to 20th, you will receive access to Soulframe’s Preludes alpha testing, joining a small group of players currently exploring within. Since this could lead to a significant increase in the number of players, Steve Sinclair, CEO of Digital Extremes, was questioned during a press preview if it suggests that an early access release might be imminent.
He said, “We have some plans for our development processes that aren’t quite set yet. We prefer not to start anything publicly until those plans are in place. So, this could be an excellent time to join us and contribute towards shaping our future, but there are a few more things we need to put into action first before we can attempt that.
Though the developers haven’t given specific dates yet about when Soulframe updates will be released, they did reveal some upcoming features during Tennocon 2025, with the most significant being a new quest based on the Waste Bear legend. In this tale, you’ll be recruited by a witch who is almost as French as Clair Obscur to help a three-headed bear spirit named Bromius, who is having trouble carrying out his duty of nurturing the trees. The demo playthrough showcased this quest as part of the game presentation at Tennocon 2025.

He’s dealing with environmental pollution, you’ll encounter tiny forest creatures called Sproutfolk and need to fight to protect them from corruption. There’s also a challenging boss battle that lies within a new location called the Neath’uns. For insights into the game’s origin story, including the intriguing character named Wazzard of Wastes, be sure to watch our pre-TennoCon interview with Soulframe director Geoff Crookes.
Beyond this, developers have hinted at introducing a mote system where you can summon peculiar woodland creatures against your enemies, as well as offering enhanced character personalization by enabling hairstyle changes. Additionally, they are planning to incorporate ancient martial arts manuals into the game’s progression, which will help you master skills such as parrying. Furthermore, there is a promise of additional content in the future, including more Sparrow’s Tales, fables, and spirits of ancestors to recruit for your Nightfold camp.
It seems quite intriguing to me, perhaps because I’m easily attracted to stories where you engage in combat with a sorcerer, who in this case, happens to be a bear.
