Bungie, the developer behind Destiny 2, has clarified that they did not intentionally implement changes that players are referring to as “hidden balance adjustments” or “stealth nerfs”, in the latest expansion titled The Edge of Fate. This expansion was released on July 19, 2025 and is one of the most significant updates for Destiny 2 in a while, as it overhauls several fundamental aspects of the game.
Since wrapping up the dramatic “Saga of Light and Darkness” in Destiny 2’s storyline with The Final Shape, Bungie has been constructing the framework for a new phase in one of the most cherished live-service games. This transition was partially accomplished through the post-Final Shape episodes, which wrapped up several ongoing narratives in Destiny 2. However, the new narrative arc, titled “The Fate Saga,” truly started with the release of The Edge of Fate expansion. This latest expansion introduces fresh characters and plot points to set the stage for this new saga, while also revamping the game’s interface and overall structure, transforming how players acquire loot and enhance their equipment. Furthermore, the expansion has made substantial adjustments to the game balance, as well as numerous popular Exotic armor pieces and weapons.
In the gaming world, players have found that certain game balance adjustments made by The Edge of Fate were unannounced, sparking claims within the community that Bungie secretly weakened popular abilities and items like Warlock’s Touch of Flame and Speaker’s Sight Exotic. However, in a Reddit post, Destiny 2‘s Global Community Lead, Dylan “dmg04” Gafner, refuted these accusations, explaining that Bungie simply forgot to include some changes in the extensive patch notes for The Edge of Fate. He further assured the community that Bungie is working quickly to disclose the details about these unannounced alterations and apologized for the oversight.
Bungie Denies Accusations of Stealth Nerfs, Apologizes For Undocumented Changes
Gafner emphasized that Bungie does not secretly make adjustments or “hidden tweaks” in Destiny 2 as a standard practice, and he finds it hard to believe that they’d attempt to slip major modifications past the players unnoticed. He stressed that Bungie prioritizes “open and straightforward communication.” Moreover, he noted that the Edge of Fate patch notes submission was one of the most extensive documents Bungie has ever written, covering not just game balance changes and bug fixes, but also adjustments to Destiny 2 Bright Dust rewards, as well as economic modifications.
As a dedicated Destiny 2 gamer, I’ve seen a mix of reactions to the recent updates. Many players appreciate the big changes brought by The Edge of Fate and find the clerical oversights more acceptable given the game’s transformation. However, some of us are growing impatient due to the lack of a clear timeline for Bungie to share more details about the updates. We fear that an extended wait could hamper our ability to use our preferred builds and weapons effectively.
Given how much importance Bungie seems to be placing on The Edge of Fate as part of Destiny 2’s future, incidents like these could potentially prolong the downward trend in player numbers for Destiny 2.
