It appears that some fresh findings indicate Nintendo could be developing a brand new strategy RPG for their upcoming console, tentatively known as the ‘Switch 2’. This potential exclusive title might just be a new addition to the Fire Emblem franchise.
Back in early 2023, I got my hands on the latest mainline Fire Emblem title, FE Engage. Fast forward two years, and whispers started spreading around the gaming community that another installment was brewing in the studio’s development pipeline.
Based on recent whispers within the industry, YouTube user Doctre81 has discovered a LinkedIn profile belonging to a seasoned 3D character modeler, Takeshi Maruyama. This individual indicates they’ve been working on a “sequel of [sic] Nintendo’s SPRG” for the Switch 2. While the page doesn’t offer extensive details, the scant information it does share could be seen as a promising sign that a new Fire Emblem game might be in development.
Fire Emblem Is Nintendo’s Only Major SRPG Franchise
Among Nintendo’s well-known game franchises, it appears that Fire Emblem is the most plausible choice as the one being referred to in the LinkedIn profile, given that there have been whispers of a new series installment for some time. The Wars series could also potentially be in question, though it has not had a mainline release since 2008, with the exception of the Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp remakes released in 2023.
Based on Maruyama’s LinkedIn profile, he was hired to work on an unspecified strategy role-playing game (SRPG) exclusive to Nintendo Switch between January and April 2025. A contract of four months is commonly seen in temporary 3D character modeling roles within AAA game development, especially for specialists who join during a focused production phase. This indicates that the project, which remains shrouded in mystery, was likely under active development by early 2025. Character modeling usually happens at the beginning of full production, following the completion of design, concept art, and technical considerations. Therefore, it’s probable that the unannounced Nintendo project had moved beyond the vertical slice stage and was in either the early or mid-production phase as of 2025. Given that modern AAA projects typically take at least five years to complete, the game may not be ready for release for several more years.
The timing for bringing in character models can differ from one project to another, and it seems Maruyama joined the team later to tackle particular issues during production. Regardless of the secretive nature of this project, rumors suggest that a fresh Fire Emblem game might be unveiled in 2025. Given Nintendo’s latest trends, we can expect the upcoming installment in this beloved series to have a quick announcement-to-release cycle of less than a year.
