Summary
- Many RPGs offer players the option to embrace their dark side and indulge in evil deeds while still progressing through the game.
- Titles like Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, Cyberpunk 2077, and Mass Effect allow players to make morally ambiguous choices.
- These games offer a refreshing change from the typical RPG hero narrative by allowing players to explore darker storylines.
Role-playing games (RPGs) typically place players in the position of a character that embodies a hero, someone destined to confront the forces of darkness and ultimately save the world. This is the fundamental concept shared among many RPGs, each offering its own unique interpretation of this theme, often quite impressively so. After all, isn’t it enticing to assume the role of the celebrated hero claiming all the fame?
Perhaps it’s those individuals whose fascination lies in the ominous aspects of the narrative. Not all prefer to embody the epitome of goodness and heroism; some might rather nurture their own sinister ambitions, coincidentally eliminating the primary antagonist who poses a threat to their realm.
8. Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines
Forsake Humanity to Slake the Vampiric Thirst
After a disastrous evening in the game “Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines,” my character was unexpectedly drawn into the vampire world, transforming into another nocturnal, blood-craving being. Navigating the delicate masquerade has become crucial to avoid unwanted attention from hunters lurking near my sanctuary. As a token of mercy shown by the LA Prince, I’ve been assigned the mission to retrieve an ancient sarcophagus rumored to contain immense power. In the process, I’m learning more about this unique new life I’ve been thrust into.
In “Vampire: The Masquerade,” players must walk a fine line between maintaining control over their bloodlust and avoiding danger. If they fail to manage their hunger, they risk transforming into a ravenous beast, destroying everything in their path. However, indulging too much in human blood can lead to anemia or even death. For those seeking a less moral approach, the game offers the opportunity to give in to one’s cravings and drain numerous victims, which could lead to a loss of humanity and transformation into a more monster than man.
7. Cyberpunk 2077
Night City Affords Ample Opportunities to Make the Lives of Others a Neon Hell
In a critical mission accompanied by Jackie, V implants an artifact called the Relic directly into their brain, unknowingly merging with the digital spirit of Johnny Silverhand – a former soldier and renowned musician. As time ticks away, Johnny’s consciousness threatens to completely replace V’s own, and they find themselves trapped, unable to extract the relic without suffering immediate fatal consequences.
Under pressure of running out of time, it’s understandable that V could take shortcuts in their mission. However, players have a remarkable capacity to do more than just cut corners – they can be downright malicious towards certain characters they encounter in Night City. Frankly, there’s no justification for such behavior, except perhaps the thrill some players get from playing games with such freedom. If that appeals to you, then Cyberpunk 2077 could be a game worth exploring.
6. Fable 2
Evil Runs Alter the Character’s Appearance
In the harsh reality of poverty and winter’s chill, the protagonist of Fable 2, a character named Sparrow, and their sister Rose, long for a life in Castle Fairfax. One fateful day, their dream seems to come true when they obtain a peculiar music box from an enigmatic peddler. However, their joy is short-lived as Lucian intuits that one of them is the future hero who will bring about their downfall. Sparrow manages to flee with injuries, but tragically, Rose is slain, leaving Sparrow as the foretold hero.
Although Sparrow was supposed to put an end to Lucian, it doesn’t mean that they must always act virtuously throughout their life. The game features a complex moral system where any wrongdoing, such as harming innocents or stealing from the royal treasury, will result in changes to the character’s physical appearance. Consequently, the more malicious a character becomes, the more their features take on a demonic aspect, reflecting the evil deeds they have committed directly on their skin.
5. Vampyr
Give in to the Thirst for Blood
Originating from the creators of “Life is Strange” emerged an unexpected twist – the grim and role-playing game, “Vampyr”. Given the title, players find themselves assuming the role of one of these nocturnal creatures, transformed upon their return to England following World War 1. Navigating through life as a vampire without much understanding of his new identity, Jonathan encounters numerous challenges but also meets supportive figures such as Lady Ashbury.
In his role as a doctor, he must abide by the Hippocratic Oath, yet death seems to render it irrelevant. In this game, you can choose to drink the blood of those you’re supposed to heal, which boosts your character’s vampiric abilities and makes the game less challenging. However, resisting the urge to do so makes the game harder because you miss out on the experience points. It’s intriguing that the game encourages players to embrace evil, mirroring perhaps how vampires are always tempted to drink the blood of any human they meet.
4. Undertale
The Infamous Genocide Run
Toby Fox’s RPG left numerous gamers in awe, as its unassuming indie appearance belied the rich depth it offered. The game presents you with a human character who tumbles into an underworld teeming with monsters, with the only known escape route being a confrontation with King Asgore. Throughout your journey, you’ll encounter various monsters, some of which are friendly while others can be quite hostile. One unique feature of this game is the Mercy mechanic. By choosing the appropriate action during your turn, you have the option to spare the monster you’re currently facing and continue on your way.
In a traditional role-playing game style, sparing every monster and boss will guide them towards the Peaceful path, yet they still have the option to attack during their turn. On the other hand, eliminating monsters steers players towards the Destructive path, which will modify any subsequent playthroughs since the game keeps track of the malicious actions taken in that specific run.
3. Fallout: New Vegas
A Revenge Quest Was Never Going to be Merciful
While performing their delivery duty in Fallout: New Vegas, the courier unexpectedly gets entangled in a high-stakes affair. They unwittingly come into possession of a crucial artifact called the platinum chip, believed to control New Vegas. Benny, suspecting this, attempts a theft by shooting the messenger and taking the chip. However, against all odds, the courier survives and embarks on a mission for vengeance and justice.
As they traverse the Mojave desert, gamers have the liberty to decide their character’s behavior, ranging from rude and aggressive to downright antagonistic towards other characters they encounter. The dialogue choices and possible faction affiliations allow players to venture into the game’s more sinister aspects. Given that the person they just shot in cold blood was simply doing their job, it’s hard not to understand why they might feel little empathy for anyone they cross paths with.
2. Mass Effect
The Renegade Options Are For Those Low on Patience and Kindness
Exploring the realm of Role-Playing Games extended into space, players assume the role of Commander Shepard, a character they can tailor to their liking who is the only beacon of hope for the galaxy against the imminent danger posed by the Reapers – an advanced, intelligent race of machines that periodically wipe out civilizations and planets. With the fate of billions of lives at stake, Shepard embarks on a journey to rally the galaxy together to confront this menace.
Despite taking on the burden of saving all advanced civilizations, Shepard doesn’t have to be an angelic figure. There are numerous dialogue choices that aren’t particularly kind, with some even revealing Shepard at their most unscrupulous. For instance, she can electrify a worker to hasten past them or slug a bothersome reporter. Although not as malevolent as the Reapers, it’s still surprising to see such behavior from someone who is meant to be a savior.
1. Baldur’s Gate 3
The Dark Urge Offers a Refreshingly Evil Take on the Game
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at the incredible talent behind Larian Studios for acquiring and refining the iconic Dungeons & Dragons IP, culminating in none other than Baldur’s Gate 3. This game is another shining star added to a legendary series that has won hearts and recognition through their dedicated work on these immersive RPGs.
In Baldur’s Gate 3, players find themselves assuming control of an origin or custom character, who are tasked with the urgent mission of finding a cure for the parasitic Mind Flayer lurking within their mind. The Dark Urge, being the only origin character that can be customized, provides a fresh perspective to the narrative of Baldur’s Gate 3.
In the heat of my gaming escapades, a sinister whisper echoes within me, enticing me to commit heinous acts. It seems this voice revels in the chaos and destruction that violence and murder bring. Although I may strive to resist this dark call, sometimes, the allure becomes too strong, leading me to commit unspeakable deeds. Giving in is disarmingly simple, and for those who yearn to embody an evil character in a role-playing game, it can be downright exhilarating.
