Since Bungie, as a developer, was responsible for creating and developing the main series of Halo franchise games until the launch of Halo: Reach in 2010, it’s hard to deny that some of the essence of the Halo games is present in Destiny 2. Even though these two intellectual properties are developed by different studios, you may find the tiniest, most nuanced similarities between them. This connection and subtle impact can still be seen in the new Edge of Fate expansion for Destiny 2.
In addition to differing opinions about the length, path, and ending of Destiny 2’s latest Edge of Fate campaign, there is one aspect that everyone seems to agree on – its challenging nature. On the hardest setting, Mythic, the Edge of Fate campaign demands teamwork, skill, or an impressive arsenal in a way that evokes the Legendary All Skulls On (LASO) campaigns from the Halo series.
Destiny 2’s Edge of Fate Expansion Puts Its Campaign Front and Center, Where it Belongs
Since the beginning of the first Destiny, the campaigns from the main game and later Destiny expansions have typically functioned as a pathway to the real core gameplay experience. However, even though they are essential before some other features can be accessed, their consistent narrative and links don’t always create a smooth connection with endgame activities for many players due to various reasons.
One significant difference between the campaigns in Destiny 2 and other endgame content is the level of challenge. However, with the Edge of Fate expansion, this dynamic has shifted dramatically, as the difficulty level is now significantly greater than ever before. Unlike previous expansions in Destiny 2, the campaign for Edge of Fate introduces four different levels of difficulty. These options arguably fill a void that many previous campaigns have nearly addressed but ultimately failed to achieve, by bringing the campaign’s challenge up to the same level as the rest of the endgame content.
Destiny 2’s Edge of Fate Mythic Campaign Has Major Halo LASO Vibes
With the addition of the Fate expansion offering various levels of difficulty and innovative Banes, Boons, and other challenge modifiers, the campaign has now earned recognition as premium endgame content. This was a skill that the original Halo games mastered, not because the campaign typically served as the sole ‘endgame’ PvE content in most early Halo games, but because conquering the LASO campaigns in the Halo series provided its own satisfying reward, even without enticing rewards to collect.
In addition to the latest campaign, the challenging new Banes and activity modifications can be found in almost every end-game activity within the newly introduced Portal activities center for Destiny 2.
In the Edge of Fate expansion, it appears that Destiny 2 is shifting away from content-difficulty methods that were met with controversy, such as Champion enemies and infamous tough-as-nails ‘bullet-sponges.’ Instead, they are introducing more creative layers of difficulty, making the game feel more akin to the Halo LASO (Legendary SCARBEDGE) campaigns. While Destiny 2’s Edge of Fate campaign still offers enticing loot, the challenge itself has been elevated to levels similar to Raids and Dungeons since the beginning of the franchise.
Regardless of the distance between the Halo and Destiny series, it’s only expected that minor resemblances and impacts would occur in both directions. It’s worth noting that Destiny 2’s Bungie 30th Anniversary Pack includes some distinct content reminiscent of Halo, reflecting its origins. Furthermore, the LASO vibe from Destiny 2’s Edge of Fate expansion is a delight for fans of both franchises, and it marks a significant achievement for Destiny 2 to introduce its own take on this famous feature.
