A video filmed on the set of HBO’s Harry Potter TV show has been circulated among the fanbase, causing confusion and some worry about Nick Frost’s portrayal of Hagrid, particularly his costume size. First published in 1997 with the Philosopher’s Stone, the Harry Potter book series concluded with Deathly Hallows in 2007. Over eight movies, released from 2001 to 2011, this movie franchise has captured the hearts of countless fans for decades. Given the enduring appeal of these films, it’s no surprise that anticipation for a reboot is running high.
The new television show, set to reimagine the story of The Boy Who Lived, was initially revealed as being in preliminary stages way back in 2021. In the year 2025, some key characters have been chosen for the project. John Lithgow joins the cast as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu takes on Severus Snape, and Janet McTeer will bring Minerva McGonagall’s quick intelligence to life. Interestingly, a real-life Hogwarts has been constructed for the child actors, including Dominic McLaughlin (playing Harry), Alastair Stout (Ron), and Arabella Stanton (Hermione). This allows them to continue their education while filming the series.
Harry Potter Fans Think Reboot’s Set Video Shows Hagrid’s Prosthetic Costume
On Reddit, a brief clip from the set was leaked showing Eddie Redmayne (TremendouslyRiddled’s username) as Hagrid descending some underground steps in the reboot. The video sparked speculation among fans when they noticed that Redmayne appeared to be in poor health. Some even suggested that it might not have been Redmayne at all, but another actor wearing a prosthetic head with Redmayne’s likeness, as the figure under the costume seemed slightly out of sorts. “It looks like a prosthetic head to me,” one fan commented, raising questions about whether Martin Bayfield, who wore a prosthetic head matching Robbie Coltrane’s likeness in the original films, had returned. Fans were initially unimpressed with Redmayne’s portrayal of Hagrid during his debut, comparing it to cosplay, and their skepticism towards the character’s new representation has persisted throughout filming.
A different Reddit user brought up the idea that the actor playing Hagrid might need assistance due to the size and weight of the Hagrid costume, much like someone wearing a large, bulky mascot suit. Since Frost is approximately 1.7 meters tall, it’s plausible that he might be wearing a prosthetic suit to make him appear larger in the film. Interestingly, fans were taken aback when they learned that Frost plans to emphasize Hagrid’s more aggressive side, as discussed in an earlier interview, providing a fresh take on the character while staying faithful to the original source material.
As filming begins for the first season of the reboot, fans catch a sneak peek of Frost’s Hagrid and McLaughlin’s Harry together on set. The shooting has been happening around London, with scenes filmed at the zoo reminiscent of the iconic scene in Philosopher’s Stone where Harry communicates with a snake using Parseltongue before releasing it. There have also been leaks showing the Dursleys in action, leading many to believe that the reboot may be set during an earlier time period based on the clothing depicted.
HBO’s Harry Potter TV series is expected to premiere in late 2026 or early 2027.
