The launch of Splitgate 2 has been canceled, and Splitgate 1 will be closed down, following layoffs at 1047 Games that impacted more than 40 employees at the studio. Despite a successful beta phase, Splitgate 2 failed to attract as many players as the peak player count of the original Splitgate game on Steam, owing to multiple reasons.
Following its launch on June 6th, Splitgate 2 encountered criticism due to high microtransaction costs and lack of standout features compared to the initial game. After taking player feedback into account in the post-launch period, 1047 Games reduced the prices of in-game microtransactions in Splitgate 2. However, Steam charts show that the game has been unable to expand its player base since this adjustment. Consequently, Splitgate 2 is being reevaluated and will likely undergo further changes.
On the game’s official Twitter, creators Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian of 1047 Games announced that “Splitgate 2” will return to beta, with plans to revise the game based on player feedback. They acknowledged that they released the game prematurely, with incomplete features and errors. According to IGN, significant changes are coming to “Splitgate 2” in 2026. The developers plan to engage more with the community through playtests, surveys, and other means. However, due to a tough decision, 1047 Games is reducing some roles and reallocating resources for the overhaul of “Splitgate 2,” leading to the layoff of 45 employees. This is the second round of layoffs following departures from the “Splitgate 2” studio this past June.
Splitgate 2 is Being Unlaunched and Splitgate 1 is Being Shut Down in the Next Month
1047 Games has announced that they will be closing the original Splitgate game within approximately a month, most likely by the end of August. As reported by Proulx and Bagamian, the developers have been facing significant costs keeping the Splitgate 1 servers running for several years, amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars. However, they are investigating options such as offline play and peer-to-peer matches in Splitgate 1, which could enable players to carry on enjoying the game if these plans become a reality.
In the interim, Splitgate 2 creators, 1047 Games, intend to distribute Chapter 3 and other updates for Splitgate 2, which include fixes and critical changes. While Splitgate 2 remains playable until its launch, some fans on Twitter express dissatisfaction with 1047 Games, and a few have even considered abandoning the community to explore other games. However, others remain hopeful about Splitgate 2, hoping that it won’t become another disappointment in the live-service gaming sector.
