In the realm of cinematic critique, allow me to share an intriguing tidbit: In the second quarter of 2025, Google unveiled the staggering figure of $9.79 billion in ad revenue generated solely from YouTube. This figure underscores the undeniable popularity of this platform, and it’s clear that Google is basking in its success.
Google makes money from its YouTube platform through various methods such as users subscribing to channels on a monthly basis, contributions from Super Chat donations during live broadcasts, the YouTube Premium subscription service, and of course, advertisements. It also earns income from other areas within Google’s broader business.
In the recent quarterly report, Google disclosed its most recent earnings, showing that YouTube ads generated an astonishing $9.79 billion USD in the second quarter of 2025. Despite this impressive figure, it represents just a small portion compared to what other Google services are earning. The total ad revenue for Google reached a jaw-dropping $71.34 billion, while subscriptions to its services, platforms, and devices added another $11.20 billion to their coffers. Google Cloud also performed well, bringing in $13.62 billion.
YouTube’s Advertising Earnings Keep Going Up
In simpler terms, since 2024, this statistic has shown a substantial rise. For instance, YouTube announced earning approximately $8.66 billion from ads on their platform during the second quarter of 2024. To put it into perspective, YouTube’s third-quarter revenue in 2021 was around $7.2 billion. Furthermore, Google stated that YouTube’s ad earnings amounted to roughly $36 billion for the entirety of 2024. With a few months left, it appears that Google is on target to surpass this total in 2025.
Yet, these figures haven’t been free from criticism. In 2021, Google faced criticism when it decided to allow ads on all eligible YouTube videos, regardless of whether the creators were part of the Partner Program that shares ad revenue with video uploaders. More recently, YouTube has taken a tougher stance against adblockers, possibly boosting the number of viewers who encounter ads while watching videos. Additionally, ads are now appearing in previously ad-free areas, such as during pause screens.
Some viewers have strongly disliked the rise in advertisements on YouTube, but given the substantial earnings, it seems unlikely that Google will change direction. Presently, the most effective way for users to bypass ads is by subscribing to YouTube Premium, which significantly diminishes ad appearances within videos.
