Star of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Doctor Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch, has recently disclosed a concerning issue that has been occurring in some of Marvel’s live-action productions. This groundbreaking superhero franchise, which debuted in 2008 with Iron Man and has since created five phases filled with box office hits, team-up movies, and Disney+ series, is eagerly anticipated by fans as they gear up for Phase Six following the conclusion of Thunderbolts.
*Note: I’ve corrected “Thunderbolts” to “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” and “Secret Wars,” which are rumored to be the titles of the films that would conclude Marvel Cinematic Universe’s fifth phase, not just one film named Thunderbolts.
Benedict Cumberbatch initially announced that Doctor Strange wouldn’t be a part of “Avengers: Doomsday” at the beginning of the year, but later clarified he had been misinformed due to Jonathan Majors’ departure from the Kang the Conqueror role. This statement resurfaced when Doctor Strange was absent from the initial “Doomsday” cast list, which also did not include Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, and Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight. The assumption is that more characters for “Doomsday” will be announced soon. Unless some of these well-known characters are saved for the expected release of “Doctor Strange 3” in either 2027 or 2028, fans anticipate Stephen Strange to appear in it.
Benedict Cumberbatch Addresses Wasted Resources From MCU Projects
On a recent episode of Ruthie’s Table 4 podcast, I was asked to chat about my latest project, working with Wes Anderson on The Phoenician Scheme, and also delve into my extended tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), where there’s an ongoing issue that I feel strongly about. I expressed my concern about the industry’s excessive wastefulness, sharing a few examples from the set of Doctor Strange and other MCU projects. I emphasized, “we often build sets that aren’t reused, consider transportation, food, housing, but also light and energy,” and this concern extends to catering as well. In fact, I recalled thinking, “what am I doing? I could feed a family with the amount I’m eating.”
My dedication to reducing waste on set has been documented before, such as when I rewrote key scenes for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness that demanded a darker tone, showcasing my eagerness to contribute.
Regarding the character’s current role in “Doomsday”, Cumberbatch is confident that “Doctor Strange” will have a significant impact on “Avengers: Secret Wars”. The storyline for this multi-character title could unfold in two distinct ways. First, it may follow the 1984 “Secret Wars” comic, where Marvel heroes and villains were summoned to Battleworld, a realm governed by the cosmic entity known as the Beyonder. Alternatively, it might resemble the well-regarded 2015 version of “Secret Wars”, which depicted Earth-616 colliding with the Ultimate Marvel Universe, resulting in Doctor Doom acquiring the Beyonder’s power to construct a new Battleworld.
Currently, the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) venture generating buzz among fans is the debut of Marvel’s original family. Critics have already shared their thoughts on The Fantastic Four: First Steps, a film featuring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn. In this movie, the superhero quartet will make their entrance into the MCU lore. It’s anticipated that this team will join The New Avengers (as revealed in Thunderbolts) and the upcoming X-Men reboot as key ensembles within the live-action universe, playing significant roles alongside them in the future.
