Pokemon Anime Cast Losses

Throughout the years, the cast for the English version of the Pokemon anime has undergone changes, but Eric Stuart, known as Ash’s competitive rival Gary Oak, was part of it since the very first episode. Regrettably, he isn’t the only original cast member we lost. The demise of Rachael Lillis, who passed away after a prolonged fight with cancer in 2024, left fans of Pokemon deeply saddened. Lillis was another founding member of the anime voice cast, lending her voice to Ash’s companion Misty and Team Rocket member Jessie. Although Cathcart and Lillis didn’t voice Jessie and James during the same timeframes in the show, their loss left fans stunned, as they were instrumental in bringing the three members of Team Rocket to life. The two collaborated on other projects too, including the English dubs of popular series like Slayers and Revolutionary Girl Utena, where both Cathcart and Lillis appeared.

The sad demise of Cathcart is deeply felt, and it’s fitting that Pokemon honors a person who played such a significant role in making their characters so endearing. Although he’s no longer with us, fans who shared their childhood with Pokemon will carry his voice and the characters he brought to life in their memories for years to come.
