Particle Hearts Previews Its Surreal Gameplay Ahead of Release [EXCLUSIVE]

Game Rant unveils an exclusive sneak peek at the enigmatic upcoming title, Particle Hearts, a captivating adventure game that promises a dreamlike setting and thought-provoking puzzles. The game is scheduled for release on PC and consoles on August 25.

In the realm of video games, Particle Hearts, created by Underwater Fire based in Los Angeles and published by First Break Labs, is an engaging indie adventure title immersed in a world composed of visible particles. This unique attribute isn’t merely decorative, but intertwines significantly with the gameplay mechanics. As players progress, they acquire abilities to mold the surrounding particles, which become essential in overcoming diverse challenges.

Prior to the August launch of “Particle Hearts”, Underwater Fire recently unveiled a detailed video preview of their upcoming game, which Game Rant has the exclusive scoop on. The video is narrated by Jess Feidt, a former Call of Duty team member who left Treyarch in 2022 to establish the studio behind “Particle Hearts”. Lasting approximately 6 minutes, the video presents Feidt playing an early segment of the game, during which the horned protagonist initially acquires their first ability, known as Burst.

Particle Hearts Will Let Players Turn Into Particles

In essence, Burst enables the primary character to transform into particles, granting numerous advantages such as passing through certain obstacles. For instance, Feidt employs this ability by moving through a wall of massive thorns guarding a Figment Gate, which resembles a mystical glowing portal that transports players to distinct realms where many of the game’s challenges are located within Particle Hearts. Preliminary observations suggest that Figment Gates in this game play a role similar to Shrines in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

In this game, the Burst ability is not just for combat, but also for navigating platform levels. For instance, in the Figment Gate world, the level design promotes using Burst to move across different platforms, even moving ones. The video reveals that players can use Burst not only to pass through objects in front of them, but also beneath them. This is demonstrated around the 3:36 mark, where Feidt uses it to fall through a big floor grate. The game Particle Hearts will delve into the principles behind Burst and other abilities, often combining them to create a variety of puzzle-platforming obstacles.

During Steam Next Fest’s recent edition, a demo for the upcoming game, Underwater Fire’s indie adventure, was unveiled. Unlike other demos from the event which were removed once it ended in June 2025, the trial version of this game can still be downloaded from Valve’s storefront. The game, Particle Hearts, is set to launch simultaneously on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC on the same day.
