Marvel’s latest Disney+ series, titled “The Sight of Wakanda“, offers a fascinating journey through the chronicles of this intriguing Marvel creation. Following Ryan Coogler’s pattern of delivering captivating projects, it’s no wonder given the acclaimed success of “Sinners” this year. Unlike other series such as “X-Men ’97“, “What If…?“, and “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man“, it unfolds within the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Sacred Timeline.” Essentially, “The Sight of Wakanda” is a compelling anthology series that delves into the history of the nation of Wakanda, spanning from its ancient past to distant future. In essence, The Sight of Wakanda offers an engaging and brief exploration of one of Marvel’s most captivating creations.
In the show, titled “Eyes of Wakanda“, one significant oversight from Marvel’s previous decade is rectified. The third episode, “Lost and Found”, transports viewers to ancient China during 1400 AD. Here we meet the two principal characters, Basha and Jorani. Basha is a determined Wakandan War Dog on a quest to retrieve a stolen artifact. Jorani, a Chinese woman, played a crucial role in saving Basha’s life by nursing him back to health after he was lost in the snowy mountains. However, things are not as they appear with Jorani, for she is none other than the Iron Fist. Let me explain the connection.
Iron Fist Is A Beloved Legacy Character In Marvel Comics
The Best Known Incarnation Is Danny Rand
Following the popularity of martial arts films in the 1970s, Iron Fist made his debut in Marvel Premiere #15, which was co-created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane. Danny Rand’s character, Iron Fist, has been featured in numerous comic book series alongside his crime-fighting partner and close friend Luke Cage. Rand possesses the ability to focus his inner energy and unleash it as superhuman force from Shou-Lao the Undying’s dragon heart into his hand, a power that causes significant damage. It’s no wonder then, that he is an accomplished martial artist and gymnast, able to compete with other skilled masters like Chang-Chi in combat.
The long-running series “The Immortal Iron Fist” during the 2000s significantly transformed Iron Fist into a character with an enduring legacy. A team consisting of Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction, David Aja, and Travel Foreman collaborated to establish a lineage for the Iron Fist that stretches back through time. For instance, a Marvel character named Fan Fei was the first to harness Shou-Lao’s power as far back as 1,000,000 BC. It is important to note that Danny Rand may be recognized as the Iron Fist, but he is not the only one to bear that title.
Danny Rand’s Iron Fist Had His Own Netflix Show
It, Um, Didn’t Go So Great
In the late 2010s, Danny Rand joined Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones on Netflix with his own series, but Iron Fist, which premiered in 2017, received unfavorable feedback from both fans and critics. Finn Jones gave a commendable performance as Rand, while Jessica Henwick excelled as Colleen Wing, yet the Iron Fist show was hindered by a lack of creativity and fewer spectacular fight scenes compared to Daredevil’s intricate long-take combat sequences. This put the Iron Fist series in an unfavorable position when it came to delivering memorable fights.
In contrast to other drama series of its time, Iron Fist didn’t offer anything particularly distinctive, which was a challenge for a superhero show. Spanning 23 episodes across two seasons and featuring Jones as Rand in the crossover Defenders with Netflix’s other Marvel heroes, Iron Fist struggled to gain widespread appeal before Jessica Jones and The Punisher started to lose favor among Marvel fans. Consequently, many casual fans are left puzzled about why they should have taken an interest in Iron Fist from the beginning.
Eyes Of Wakanda Shows How Great Iron Fist Can Be In The MCU
Failures Of The Past Shouldn’t Dull The Future
In “Eyes of Wakanda”, the Iron Fist demonstrates an exceptional coolness, as was shown by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on the big screen. With a character possessing supernatural abilities in martial arts, action sequences have the potential to be thrilling. However, many superhero productions over the past two decades have been criticized for their repetitive fight scenes that blend together. Yet, Iron Fist in “Eyes of Wakanda” seizes this opportunity and delivers some truly impressive combat skills.
Hi there! I’m Jorani, protector of the towering peaks. I vanquished the eternal dragon Shou-Lao and harnessed strength from its fiery core. Now, I bear the title of the Invincible Fist!
In my opinion, experiencing Jorani wielding the Iron Fist and effortlessly dismantling a horde of Wakandan War Dogs is nothing short of thrilling. The moment she unleashes the full might of the Iron Fist against Basha towards the end of the episode is pure joy. I must admit, Jorani’s Iron Fist mask is as cool as can be. As she embarks on her quest to infiltrate Wakanda’s Golden City and retrieve the artifact stolen from her people, we are treated to one stunning display of the Iron Fist’s power after another.
While ‘Lost and Found’ may not revolutionize storytelling, it doesn’t need to. It primarily highlights the awesomeness of the Iron Fist, which, given its connection to Marvel, should suffice as entertainment.
