After years of anticipation, Titan Quest 2, the long-awaited sequel for fans of the classic ARPG series, has finally been released in early access. Although it still lacks much content and needs further refinement, eager gamers can’t wait to dive in and explore what it offers. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or a newcomer, here are some tips that could prove helpful as you embark on your adventure!
Titan Quest 2 β 10 Tips & Tricks to Know Before Playing
At the outset, it’s essential to note that the game is currently in its developmental phase, known as Early Access. This means a significant portion of the game has yet to be developed, even though we only have access to the first act at present. You can expect this state to continue until major updates are released, typically after several months, so please keep this in mind as you play.
Tip #1 β You Can Change the Control Scheme
To start, Titan Quest 2 offers a user-friendly method for adjusting your control layout, especially regarding movement. Initially, you’ll find that the Action RPG (ARPG) setup allows you to navigate using the left mouse button.
Fortunately for me as a fan, if you’re not fond of this setup, you can easily navigate to the settings menu and find your way to the ‘controls.’ In there, you have the freedom to modify the ‘Input Preset’ to ‘WASD’, which lets you move around using the WASD keys instead of clicking everywhere.
You have the option to configure the game so that moving, interacting, and using abilities can all be done with a single click of the left mouse button. Additionally, playing with a controller is possible as well, considering the game is designed for compatibility with Steam Deck. However, it’s important to note that the performance may vary significantly in its current state when using the Steam Deck.
Tip #2 β You Can Also Change Item Color Schemes
Did you play the original Titan Quest? If that’s the case, you might find the color coding of items in this new version a bit puzzling. In the older game, yellow usually denoted magical items, blue was used for epics, and purple signified legendary or quest items.
In essence, Titan Quest 2 adopts a style similar to other Action Role-Playing Games (ARPGs) that have been around for some time. To illustrate, they’ve designated magical items in blue and epics in purple, as opposed to the original color scheme.
Luckily, you’re able to modify this within the game’s settings menu as well. Prior to diving into your initial attempt at completing the single act currently available, you can navigate to the “gameplay” section in the settings menu. This is where you can adjust the “Item Color Scheme” setting to “Legacy”, which will make the items more consistent with what long-time players are accustomed to.
Tip #3 β Potions Work Differently Here
If you’ve recently dabbled in games resembling Path of Exile, you might find this game’s potion mechanism somewhat familiar. Instead of enabling you to hoard potions and consume them en masse for survival, it operates a bit like PoE does now.
Now, you have potions added to your collection, which offer different kinds of boosts upon usage or just by carrying them. For instance, you might find an elixir that increases your maximum energy level significantly when consumed, but it could also grant additional passive abilities while held.
The potions operate based on a charging system now; recharge them by participating in battles and defeating adversaries, which will refill their uses. This specifically applies to health potions, implying that aggressive actions yield some benefits.
In this game, it’s advisable to focus on increasing your energy regeneration instead of relying solely on single-use energy potions. If you aim to continuously use abilities, boosting your energy regen is more effective. Given the scarcity of your potions, strive to maximize your energy regeneration as much as possible so that you won’t run out during combat!
Tip #4 β Check Your Map Frequently
To ensure you finish every mission you encounter, don’t forget to regularly consult your map. That’s because your quest log is linked closely with this interface, and you have two distinct kinds of missions available for completion.
As an enthusiast, I’d put it this way: The main storyline is what we call Fated Quests, so if you want to follow the game’s actual plot, these are the quests you should prioritize. On the other hand, World Quests are the additional activities that while fun and engaging, may not have a significant impact on the overall story arc.
On this menu, you can switch between ongoing and accomplished tasks, enabling you to monitor your incomplete tasks and review the ones that were previously completed, if you ever needed a reminder about them.
Tip #5 β Choices to Make
At the start of the game, you’ll come across an unusual statue that allows interaction. It presents you with three choices, each tied to one of your key characteristics. To maximize the benefit from your free weapon, be mindful of your chosen build and select the appropriate option accordingly.
Here are the choices that you are presented with:
- Imagine wrestling a mighty lion β Might
- Imagine diving with the nimble dolphin β Agility
- Imagine observing the world with the wise owl β Knowledge
It’s quite clear, really, as the animals in this game symbolize the characteristics they represent. If you weren’t carefully reading the game’s descriptions, you might have missed this connection.
Tip #6 β Traversal is a Thing Now Too
Even though it’s not overly complex, you might find yourself perplexed if you haven’t delved into action role-playing games (ARPGs) from more contemporary times. The game now features various areas where you can scale, leap, and explore throughout the entire map.
In Diablo 4, similar to glowing markers, there are indicators near edges or walls that require clicking on them or pressing specific keys like left alt to progress. Be mindful of your surroundings when you feel stuck, as the pathway may not always be immediately obvious and can easily go unnoticed at times.
Tip #7 β Watch Out for Secrets in Every Corner
In certain hidden locations across the map, you’ll find additional treasures waiting for those adventurous enough to seek them out. If you enjoy delving deep into every corner, rest assured, your perseverance will be duly compensated.
If you notice something odd about a hallway or wall, take a moment to examine the surroundings carefully. It’s quite possible that this is a hidden passageway, which can be unlocked by activating an item in the vicinity. Overcome any barriers if you encounter them, since they could conceal an interactive object functioning as a switch.
These elements might seem quite apparent in the current version of the game, because the complete game won’t be released for another year. Remember this advice, as finding hidden secrets could become more challenging with upcoming updates.
Tip #8 β Died in Action? Use a Recovery Portal!
If you meet your demise within the game, your character will be transported back to the most recent location where you triggered a respawn point. If the thought of retracing your steps to where you fell is daunting, put aside your concerns and take another look at that respawn point instead.
Should you float over the location where you perished, you’ll discover a choice for a resurrection point, allowing you to instantaneously transport back to your previous spot!
Tip #9 β The Mastery System
In Titan Quest 2, you’ll encounter an early-unlockable mastery system that swiftly opens up as you make your way through the introductory chapter. This part won’t take much of your time, particularly if you’re a seasoned gamer.
In order to utilize this system, you’ll require a formidable skill or expertise, not divinity per se. You can advance through new mastery levels by gaining experience, accomplishing tasks of great significance, and even completing specific missions.
As an enthusiast, I always strive to engage with and complete as much content as I possibly can. This way, I aim to fully optimize my character build within the boundaries set by the early access version of the game.
Tip #10 β Game Too Easy? You Can Fix That
Once you reach a particular stage in the game, you’ll unlock your initial Ritual Shrine. This feature offers several functions, including the option to redistribute your attribute points. For the sake of this tutorial, the most important aspect is its ability to modify the game’s difficulty level.
Choosing the “Ritual of Ares” allows you to modify several aspects that affect the game’s overall challenge level. You can use your gold to make enemies in earlier regions more powerful, or simply adjust the strength of all enemies across the board, either increasing or decreasing it as desired.
Option: You have the ability to boost enemy levels up to +5. Each level incrementally raises the price of the ritual in gold. Although it doesn’t directly affect the game’s overall difficulty, you can opt to reappear enemies within the area if you wish to carry on farming or experimenting with your current setup without restarting the game by paying for this feature.
That wraps up all our tips for now. Just bear in mind that the game is currently in its early stages of development, so it won’t be fully polished for several more months. Some of these strategies might change as they fine-tune the game mechanics, so stay flexible!
