Summary
- EA’s history includes canceled games like Marvel: Chaos, Dawngate, and Project Ragtag.
- Ambitious titles like Batman: The Dark Knight and the Star Wars Mandalorian shooter got axed.
- Fans still crave Dead Space 4 as Visceral Games’ legacy lives on in Striking Distance Studios’ The Callisto Protocol.
As a passionate gamer myself, I can’t help but appreciate the massive impact Electronic Arts has on our gaming world. This powerhouse studio consistently churns out an impressive array of titles each year, all while keeping the fire burning for games we’ve grown to love. Yet, there have been times when eagerly awaited games were unfortunately pulled from the release schedule for reasons beyond our control.
Electronic Arts has a long-standing reputation for strategically acquiring title rights, even famous franchises, which sometimes leads to the closure of studios and their beloved games. These games, eagerly awaited by fans, often leave them pondering about how they might have evolved if they had been launched.
Marvel: Chaos
The Lost Sequel To Marvel Nemesis
- Developer: EA Chicago
As a devoted fan, I had eagerly anticipated Marvel: Chaos, envisioned as an unofficial sequel to Marvel Nemesis: Rise Of The Imperfects. This captivating project aimed to introduce characters like Captain America, Hulk, and Juggernaut who hadn’t been part of the action before. However, when EA Chicago shut its doors, Marvel: Chaos marked the end of Electronic Arts’ Marvel game ventures for quite some time, until the exciting announcement of EA Motive’s Iron Man game.
Fans only got brief peeks at Marvel: Chaos, as the prototype revealed more lively graphics compared to the dimmer, murky looks of Marvel Nemesis. Given EA Chicago’s expertise in 3D fighting games like Def Jam and Fight Night, it’s likely they intended to incorporate similar style and mechanics into this superhero brawler based on the Marvel universe.
Dawngate
EA’s MOBA Did Not Survive A Saturated Market
- Developer: Visceral Games
In the 2010s, numerous companies tried to capitalize on the popularity of Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games, but only a select few could compete with giants such as DOTA 2 and League of Legends. Electronic Arts (EA) was among those who wanted to join the fray, and in 2014 they released a beta version of their MOBA game, Dawngate, complete with all the standard features: a collection of characters, fighting waves of minions along lanes, and teamwork to destroy the opposition’s side of the map.
The beta testing for the game Dawngate failed to impress due to its lack of fresh ideas, ultimately resulting in the halt of all further development after only a few short months.
Aliens: Colonial Marines (EA Version)
Fans Almost Went To The Xenomorph Homeworld
- Developer: Check Six Games
Prior to Gearbox Software creating the game that turned out to be disappointing for many, Aliens: Colonial Marines, development on the title had actually begun much earlier by Electronic Arts (EA) and Check Six Games in the early 2000s. The public saw a glimpse of this early version at E3 2001, along with some screenshots that were released intermittently over time.
The cause for the game’s cancellation remains a mystery, as Electronic Arts has declared they will not proceed with “Aliens: Colonial Marines.” Details that have emerged include the main character, Lt. Nakamuri, who fights fearsome Xenomorphs on board the U.S.S. Sulaco and journeys to the home planet of these extraterrestrial creatures.
Titanfall 3
Respawn Canceled The Third Game To Focus On Star Wars
- Developer: Respawn Entertainment
The eagerly awaited Titanfall 3 garnered much excitement following the notable enhancements showcased in Titanfall 2, its predecessor. Moreover, the resounding success of the spin-off game, Apex Legends, set within the same universe, fueled the craving for a sequel. The blend of first-person shooter action with towering mechs offered a distinctive multiplayer adventure, supplemented by an engaging narrative mode.
By introducing a third installment of “Titanfall”, it could have expanded its universe further and provided fans with an epic story that could rival the intrigue found in the Star Wars Jedi series. Regrettably, Electronic Arts had to reduce staff at Respawn Entertainment, which shifted their focus towards the third Star Wars Jedi game instead.
Black Panther
What Could Have Been The Definitive Black Panther Game
- Developer: Cliffhanger Games
In 2023, Cliffhanger Games unveiled their Black Panther game, published by Electronic Arts, leaving Marvel enthusiasts eager to learn about the unique experience a single-player Black Panther title would offer. Rumors surfaced that players would be given the opportunity to decide which character would take on the mantle and rule over Wakanda, with options ranging from T’Challa, Shuri, M’Baku, Azari, Killmonger, and several others.
Instead of the “Black Panther” game featuring RPG elements and an open world, it could have been a powerful representation of Marvel’s legendary character. Regrettably, Cliffhanger Games was disbanded by Electronic Arts in 2025, resulting in the game’s cancellation, leaving many eager gamers disheartened.
Project Ragtag
The Canceled Precursor To Star Wars Outlaws
- Developer: EA Vancouver, Motive
Under the leadership of Amy Hennig, the co-creator of Uncharted, Project Ragtag was intended to be a daring game developed by EA Vancouver and EA Motive. This project aimed to combine elements of criminal underworlds with sci-fi adventures within the Star Wars universe. The storyline would have revolved around a group of criminals attempting the galaxy’s most significant heist, which was later adapted into Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment’s Star Wars Outlaws concept.
Unfortunately, due to Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm and subsequent changes in direction, Project Ragtag did not move forward. EA Vancouver shifted focus to sports and racing games, while EA Motive began working on other Star Wars projects such as Star Wars Battlefront 2. Later, they also developed the unexpected remake of Dead Space.
The Ripper
A Fun Concept But A Potentially Controversial One
- Developer: Visceral Games
The developers at Visceral Games, known for their work on the horror-themed game Dead Space, were planning to leverage their talent for gruesome scenes and fear by creating a new third-person title. In this game, called The Ripper, players would assume the role of a renowned figure, who in this instance was conceived as a demon hunter falsely accused of being a merciless serial killer. This character hunted demons on the streets of Whitechapel, London, where he was framed for murdering sex workers.
It’s thought, although not definitively confirmed, that the idea of making a story where a real-life murderer was portrayed as a hero might have been contentious and could have influenced EA’s choice to halt the project. Instead, Visceral Games opted to create the critically acclaimed horror games “Dead Space 2” and “Dead Space 3”, which significantly boosted their reputation in the gaming industry.
Batman: The Dark Knight
EA Almost Gave Fans The First Open-World Batman Adventure
- Developer: Pandemic Studios
The film adaptation of “Batman Begins” proved unexpectedly impressive in the realm of movie-based video games, prompting Pandemic Studios to assume control over a game based on “The Dark Knight”. What was known as “Batman: The Dark Knight” was initially slated to be the first open-world DC game. In this version, players could traverse rooftops, operate the Tumbler vehicle, and jet around Gotham City on the Bat-Pod. However, before its release, “Batman: Arkham City” came along and took over this role.
Initially, Batman: The Dark Knight seemed like a bold endeavor; however, the ambition behind it eventually led to its downfall. Pandemic Studios aspired to craft an authentic Batman video game that would complement the hit movie, but this ambition resulted in numerous setbacks. As the project continued to encounter delays, Electronic Arts ultimately chose to terminate it when it failed to meet its deadline.
Star Wars Mandalorian Game
Lay-Offs Canceled A New First-Person Star Wars Shooter
- Developer: Respawn Entertainment
Following the triumph of their Star Wars Jedi series, it has been revealed that Respawn Entertainment will take on additional Star Wars projects in the time ahead. One yet to be launched is Star Wars: Zero Company, a turn-based strategy game reminiscent of XCOM in design. Simultaneously, another project was planned to be an open-world first-person shooter centered around a Mandalorian bounty hunter character.
As a passionate fan of “The Mandalorian” series, I was truly bummed out when the game got scrapped. After all, Respawn Entertainment had demonstrated an impressive knack for merging verticality into first-person shooters with hits like Titanfall and Apex Legends. Frankly, they seemed tailor-made to create a captivating bounty hunter game.
Unfortunately, it appears their team was hit hard by the recent waves of layoffs in the gaming industry, which might have played a role in the cancellation of the project. Here’s to hoping that better days are ahead for Respawn and the possibility of a Mandalorian-themed adventure returns!
Dead Space 4
Fans Are Still Hoping For A Fourth Game
- Developer: Visceral Games
Although the third installment didn’t receive as much affection as the first two, the Dead Space trilogy is widely acknowledged as a groundbreaking series that significantly shaped horror gaming in the 2010s. Many enthusiasts yearned for a fourth game. Visceral Games intended to deliver Dead Space 4 to their fans, but unfortunately, their studio was disbanded by Electronic Arts, preventing the Dead Space title from being used until the 2023 remake.
Glenn Schofield, who used to work at Visceral Games, established Striking Distance Studios and developed a game that can be seen as a spiritual equivalent to Dead Space titled The Callisto Protocol. This game boasts an immersive user interface, gruesome and unsettling body horror, third-person shooting mechanics, and a rough space environment. Essentially, it offers fans a gaming experience similar to what they might expect from a potential Dead Space 4, although it’s not directly linked to the original series.
