Ryan Condal, showrunner for “House of the Dragon,” has hinted at an unprecedented level of production for season 3 of this acclaimed fantasy series. Fans eagerly awaiting the return to Westeros are in for a treat as they gear up for what promises to be the most intense battle yet in season 3. The suspense is palpable following the cliffhanger at the end of season 2, where Rhaenyra made a deal with Alicent to end the war, hoping that peace could be maintained with Aemond.
In June of last year, the second season of the prequel to “Game of Thrones,” titled “House of the Dragon,” premiered and has been renewed for a third and fourth season. This series is adapted from George R.R. Martin’s novel “Fire & Blood.” The storyline centers around the decline of House Targaryen, as they become embroiled in a massive civil war that tears families apart due to greed and treachery. As we move into season three, the narrative will continue from where the second season finale left off, with tensions escalating further as the Targaryen dynasty faces even greater challenges ahead.
House of the Dragon Creator Explains How Much Bigger Season 3 Will Be

In a recent chat on The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of podcast, House of the Dragon creators Ryan Condal and David Mandel discussed interesting finds at Heritage Auctions’ Memorabilia auction. Unsurprisingly, the conversation veered towards the progress of season 3 of the fantasy series. Condal shared that they had just completed filming in Wales and are currently in the thick of production, moving forward to other shooting spots. He further added that season 3 is significantly larger than season 2, leaving him continually amazed as he navigates the set, taking in all the massive structures being built by the team, which he hadn’t fully grasped was so much more extensive compared to the show’s second edition.
Currently, we’re deep into the production process. We’ve completed filming in Wales, and now we’re tackling some massive projects at our studio, followed by other locations we’re working on simultaneously. This phase of our schedule is underway, and it’s a whirlwind right up until July and August. Therefore, I’ll be heading to the set tomorrow to kick off some incredibly exciting things happening this month. To put it simply, we’re smack in the middle of it all, and everything is going fantastic. The scale of this season is truly massive – every day I walk around and see the sets we’re building, the actions we’re filming, the number of costumes, extras, and more…I knew it would be bigger than Season 2, but I hadn’t quite grasped just how much.

Fans have already caught a sneak peek of the grandeur of House of the Dragon’s Season 3, as set photos leaked earlier this year. These pictures show the construction process of the House of the Dragon Season 3 set, which appears to be both King’s Landing Red Keep and the Weirwood Tree courtyard. The images hint that these locations will remain significant when the series returns for its third season. Additionally, we got a sneak peek at the building of Corlys Velaryon’s ship, ‘The Queen Who Never Was’.

It appears that the latest news from Condal shares similarities with the upcoming strife hinted in George R.R. Martin’s book “Fire & Blood,” published in 2018, which takes place approximately 100 years following the unification of the Seven Kingdoms by Targaryen conquest, around 200 years before the occurrences depicted in “Game of Thrones,” and 172 years before Daenerys Targaryen’s birth. As of now, there’s no confirmed release date for the third season of “House of the Dragon,” but it seems that fans may have to wait until the summer of 2026 to catch new episodes.
