Elden Ring Nightreign’s Seamless co-op mod now allows up to 6 players, but won’t add any more as ‘the game just becomes comically easy’

Initially, FromSoftware seemed firm on limiting Elden Ring Nightreign to a single player or three-player option, with the director stating that the game was designed for groups of three. However, it quickly became apparent that this wouldn’t work out, especially given the complaints from players who didn’t have an extra two teammates readily available. Eventually, duos were confirmed and made playable in update 1.02. As a gamer, I was relieved to see this change!

In contrast to the joy felt by many as they discard an unnecessary companion, the creators of the Nightreign Seamless cooperative mode have found it necessary to alter their course to prevent their work from becoming superfluous.

According to Yui, who posted on Patreon, Nightreign is a recent update that FromSoftware continues to manage. Currently, the smooth cooperative mod is fully-featured. Initially, it was meant to fill the void until the developers incorporated official two-player functionality. Now that this has happened, the main advantage of the mod over the original game lies in its customizability and increased player capacity.

Instead of expanding the Seamless co-op mod in the same direction, it’s time to explore increasing the player count in Nightreign. Currently, Nightreign supports up to six players, but adding more than five can cause bugs, making the experience unstable. The developers are actively working on fixing these issues at the moment. Once the bugs are resolved, they plan to transition the project into a maintenance phase.

Yui clarifies, “I’m not considering incorporating Player versus Player (PvP) or random matchmaking. Increasing the maximum player count is possible, but going beyond six players feels excessive. Even with an extremely steep enemy scaling, the game would become too effortless at that point.

I find the idea amusing to disrupt the game by facing Adel with a large number of other players, even if it means breaking the rules. If there’s an opportunity to eliminate Gaping Jaw quickly, I’d take it, but since that seems unlikely, I’m content with playing against six others instead.

Besides inviting a few more friends who haven’t joined the chaotic multiplayer game of Nightreign yet, we can now increase the challenge level as well. The mod offers adjustable enemy strength scaling, enabling us to amplify the power of the Nightlords beyond their normal Everdark abilities.

As a devoted enthusiast, I’ve noticed in the settings file that the health_scaling is set up like ‘health_scaling = 100’. This implies that the scaling formula from the original game will be applied at full strength (100%) for each additional player joining. Contrary to what might seem obvious, this doesn’t mean that enemies will have 100% more health per player added.

“To illustrate, in the base game, an enemy’s health increases by 25% for every player. Changing the ‘health_scaling’ value to 50 means a 12.5% increase in their health, while setting it to 1000 results in a 250% increase. However, keep in mind that this adjustment doesn’t apply to camp enemies or other creatures roaming the map. If you prefer a balanced gameplay experience, consider having one player take a break from combat or guide them towards a different part of the map.”

To be truthful, I’m more thrilled at the idea of joining a team of four than I was about embarking on duo adventures. Although I’ve enjoyed my time in a trio, it always felt unjust to bypass the traditional four-player cooperative play, thereby excluding one member from our regular gaming group.
