The upcoming title, “Duskfade,” which plans to launch on PC via Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, draws influence from timeless PS2 games such as “Kingdom Hearts” and “Jak and Daxter.” This game, unveiled for the first time this year, is poised to be a heartfelt tribute to classic 3D action-platformers.
In today’s gaming landscape, it can be tough to find action-platformers like the ones we used to adore back in the PlayStation 2 era during the sixth generation of consoles. Back then, platformers ruled supreme with critically acclaimed 3D games such as Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, and Ratchet & Clank by Insomniac Games. With these gems becoming increasingly scarce nowadays, any announcement of a similar title gets me pumped up! Gamers who long for more experiences in this genre should definitely watch out for Duskfade.
Duskfade is Inspired by PS2 Classics

In 2026, the game titled “Duskfade” is set to debut, proudly showcasing its influences. As Weird Beluga, the developer, shared in a recent gameplay demonstration video, “Duskfade” boasts visuals heavily influenced by “Kingdom Hearts,” but with gameplay more akin to the “Jak and Daxter” series. The same video also revealed that the protagonist of “Duskfade,” Zirian, was inspired by Jim Hawkins from “Treasure Planet.” Furthermore, it’s been confirmed that “Ratchet & Clank” has played a role in shaping “Duskfade” as well. With such esteemed inspirations, there’s much anticipation for the final product to deliver. Attendees of Gamescom this month will have the opportunity to test out “Duskfade” before its 2026 release.

The protagonist of Duskfade carries a substantial sword and exhibits agility reminiscent of Sora with his keyblade. Players encounter platforming obstacles similar to those found in Jak and Daxter, including rail-grinding akin to Ratchet & Clank. Immersed in a lively fantasy realm that evokes the essence of classic PS2 games, I eagerly anticipate experiencing Duskfade personally, given my fondness for this genre and its scarcity in modern titles.

It’s worth noting that the franchises that influenced Duskfade have mostly fallen quiet. Specifically, it’s been four years since a new Ratchet & Clank game was released, and although Kingdom Hearts 4 is in production, there’s no telling when it will hit the shelves. Jak and Daxter has been absent even longer, and at this point, it seems unlikely that we’ll see a new installment in that series. In light of these circumstances, indie games like Duskfade may step up to take on more prominent roles.
