As the release of the game drew closer, it was evident that “Mafia: The Old Country” wasn’t the anticipated sequel to “Mafia 3” as many fans had expected. Instead, it turned out to be a prequel, set in early 20th-century Sicily, several decades prior to the original “Mafia” game’s events.
Fans of the series will recognize that many Mafia characters have Sicilian roots. Consequently, it’s not shocking to find out that several familiar faces reappear in Mafia: The Old Country. While some appear briefly, a few key characters take on crucial roles in this latest installment of the series.

All Returning Characters in Mafia: The Old Country
In the game Mafia: The Old Country, four familiar characters reappear. Among these, Leo Galante stands out as a fan favorite from the second and third mainline versions of the series. Additionally, Giuseppe Palminteri, a character from Mafia 2, plays an important role in the storyline of Mafia: The Old Country. Lastly, Frank Vinci and Sam Trapani are also back, although they have only minor appearances; however, it’s delightful to see them re-emerge nonetheless.
Leo Galante
Many enthusiasts of the Mafia series are familiar with Leo Galante as the Consigliere for the Vinci Crime Family, but in Mafia: The Old Country, they encounter a different side of him. Here, he, along with his grandfather Niccolo, govern Porto Almaro and maintain a close alliance with the Torrisi Crime Family. In this game, Leo effectively serves as a guiding figure for the main character, Enzo.
Giuseppe Palminteri
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but appreciate the intriguing connection between the Torrisi family and Giuseppe Palminteri in Mafia 2. Known later as Empire Bay’s go-to fixer, he was the one who supplied Vito with various illicit goods, including forgeries and firearms. It’s fascinating to see his expertise being passed down to Enzo a good half-century earlier in this captivating narrative.
Frank Vinci & Sam Trapani
The Definitive Edition,” Sam is depicted as one of the top lieutenants (caporegimes) for the Salieri Crime Family. However, he eventually betrays Tommy and the rest of the family. In contrast, Frank leads the Vinci Crime Family in “Mafia 2.” Both characters make brief appearances in “Mafia: The Old Country,” but their roles are primarily included to please fans rather than having significant impacts on the storyline.
