McDonald’s Issues Apology to Pokemon Fans

Hey fellow Pokémon enthusiasts! I wanted to share some news that might affect our gaming experience at McDonald’s. It seems there’s been an unexpected hiccup during the distribution event for the Pokémon Trading Card Game in some of their restaurants, causing the event to end early on the very same day it started. Unfortunately, the exact number of affected locations isn’t clear yet, but if you’re one of the fans in Japan hoping to grab your cards, make sure to dash over to your nearby McDonald’s as quickly as possible! Let’s hope they sort things out and we can continue our gaming adventures uninterrupted. Stay tuned for updates!

Beginning mid-July, a Japan-exclusive promotion was unveiled, and on August 8th, eight new Pokemon-themed Happy Meal toys were introduced at the restaurant chain. This limited-time offer is scheduled to continue until August 14th. The collection of special toys features popular characters such as Mega Charizard X, Lucario, and all three Gen 1 starter Pokemon. Additionally, from August 9th to 11th, customers can participate in a separate short-term campaign where they can receive exclusive Pokemon Trading Card Game cards along with their meals.

McDonald’s is Running Out of Pokemon Cards Fast

It turns out that the exclusive Pokemon TCG promotional cards from McDonald’s are selling incredibly quickly, far beyond what was anticipated. In response, McDonald’s has issued an apology on its Japanese website to fans of the trading card game who have been left disappointed upon visiting restaurants hoping to obtain these special cards. The statement explains that numerous locations have had to prematurely halt distribution of the promo cards due to “unexpected sales volume.” Regrettably, McDonald’s asks customers not to contact individual outlets to inquire about the availability of the Pokemon TCG cards.

Anticipation runs high among fans of the game for the promotional cards, as they are highly sought after. Notably, rare Pokémon cards can reach extraordinary prices, such as the Pikachu Illustrator trainer card that fetched over $5.2 million during a 2022 auction. However, it’s extremely unlikely that the newly issued cards featuring original artwork and a small golden arches emblem will approach that level of value. Nevertheless, current listings on eBay include a set of 50 sealed packs priced at close to $1,000, with 25 already sold, and individual cards like Pikachu fetching prices between $20 and $40.

These current promotions aren’t new for McDonald’s, as they have a history of teaming up with video games for sales. In the U.S. alone, McDonald’s has held seven Pokémon-themed collaborations since 2011, along with four each for Mario and Sonic franchises, three for Skylanders, and other popular brands like Minecraft and Angry Birds. The latest U.S. collaboration with Pokémon took place in January, and it also faced criticism due to missing Pokémon Trading Card Game cards in Happy Meals.
