On Steam, a large number of users can no longer use PayPal as a payment method due to PayPal’s decision to only support a limited range of currencies, specifically EUR, CAD, GBP, JPY, AUD, and USD. This move has stirred up controversy in the past regarding censorship on Steam, but now PayPal is back in the news for negative reasons.
Prior to the current controversy, Steam had been facing challenges with its payment processors, who were reportedly pushing the well-known platform to remove adult content titles, some of which weren’t violating any laws. MasterCard was often accused of enforcing this censorship, but PayPal also encountered criticism from the gaming community.
PayPal Now Only Supports a Handful of Currencies on Steam
In the midst of Steam’s ongoing debate over censorship, the platform unexpectedly declared that PayPal will no longer handle transactions using currencies other than Euro (EUR), Canadian Dollar (CAD), British Pound (GBP), Japanese Yen (JPY), Australian Dollar (AUD), and United States Dollar (USD). This move affects a significant number of gamers across various regions. Countries in Europe with non-Euro official currencies can still purchase items by paying in Euro, but Steam is urging affected users to explore other payment options. The company also recommends considering Steam Wallet codes as an alternative, since these codes bypass the need for payment processors like PayPal. Neither PayPal nor Valve (Steam’s parent company) have disclosed the reasons behind this shift, but it has been revealed that PayPal’s bank will no longer handle payments for Steam in certain currencies.

On Steam’s notice about unauthorized PayPal payments, the company assures customers that they plan to offer more payment options in the future. Yet, there appears to be a growing discontent towards Steam and its payment processors. However, this backlash might not reach the same intensity as the recent criticism over Steam’s censorship of numerous games. It remains unclear whether Steam will indeed switch PayPal with localized alternatives in affected areas or if users will continue to use existing payment methods and Steam Wallet codes.

One significant gaming platform is Steam, and adjustments made to it – be they favorable or unfavorable – immediately influence countless gamers. The repercussions of PayPal’s recent action serve as an illustrative example. As per World Population Review, Steam boasts close to five million users in Brazil, all of whom are now barred from using PayPal for purchases. While countries like Turkey and Russia had previously been unable to utilize PayPal, this latest move expands the number of affected users by adding millions more who can only access a handful of payment options.
