Summary
- Action RPGs are more enjoyable with diverse weapon choices like Castle Crashers, offering over 50 strange weapons.
- Rise of the Ronin introduces unique weapons like flamethrowers in an open-world samurai setting.
- Avowed stands out with traditional and magical weapons like wands, enhancing combat diversity and satisfaction.
Action role-playing games become more exciting when there’s a wide array of weapons to keep battles interesting. For instance, the Kingdom Hearts series is enjoyable, yet all the playable characters consistently wield Keyblades which are essentially swords. While swords can be effective in action RPGs, it would be more engaging if there were a greater variety of combat options beyond them.
Instead of focusing solely on action RPGs that boast weapon variety, we’ll evaluate them based on the richness and diversity of their weapon systems, as well as the general gameplay quality. Here, one character might be equipped with numerous weapons, or players could discover new arsenals by switching between characters. Regardless, let’s compare these games to determine which ones offer the most extensive selection and provide a top-notch gaming experience.
Castle Crashers
Wacky Weapons, Wacky World
Back in the golden days of indie gaming on Xbox 360, I was completely hooked on Castle Crashers. It originally showcased four knights wielding elemental powers, but over time, it morphed into a kaleidoscope of playable characters and weapons, with more than fifty unique options now available – the most out of any game here!
From a Pitchfork to a Fishing Rod, Lollipop or even a Lobster, the variety of weapons is as bizarre as it gets. Admittedly, most are blunt objects, which can be a tad underwhelming, but each one boasts unique stats that make every swing feel special. And let’s face it, there’s nothing quite like smacking enemies with a lollipop!
Rise Of The Ronin
Flamethrowers In Japan
In the game titled “Rise of the Ronin“, players find themselves immersed in an open-world scenario during Japan’s steam revolution era. Players have the liberty to assume the role of a noble samurai, engaging in combat with foes, or they can opt for stealthy approaches. An assortment of sharp instruments is at their disposal, ranging from swords and spears to more than a dozen alternatives, including an array of ranged weapons. Unlike most samurai games, this one offers revolvers and muskets for players to experiment with. The Fire Pipe, undeniably the game’s highlight, serves as the flamethrower weapon.
Avowed
Putting Wands On The Map
Declared shares many elements typical of high-fantasy stories akin to those found in The Elder Scrolls series. Its combat system benefits from an array of weapons, enhancing its appeal as an engaging Action Role-Playing Game by providing a more gratifying experience.
In this rephrased version, I’ve aimed for a more conversational and engaging tone:
“You’ll find swords, maces, and axes, some even imbued with legendary magic. Alongside these, there are Grimoires and Wands that harness magic in creative ways. Among the various wands, those from Avowed stand out as perhaps the most impressive implementation in a video game yet. A simple flick of the wrist can bring immense satisfaction during combat.”
By using a more natural and engaging language, the passage becomes easier to read and understand while still conveying the original meaning.
Final Fantasy Type-0
A New Class Of Hero
In simpler terms, Final Fantasy Type-0 is a spinoff that focuses on an elite military academy and its top students, who are equipped with unique weapons ranging from playing cards to dual pistols to a massive scythe. These characters also have magical abilities, and during missions, players can quickly switch between them. Additionally, the squads can bring along Eidolons, powerful Summons that add an extra edge to combat. For instance, battling alongside Odin and his gigantic sword is one example, but each character’s personal weapon is diverse enough that players will want to try them all out.
Castlevania: Dawn Of Sorrow
Kill Dracula With Variety
Many games in the Castlevania series, which are known for their Metroidvania style, offer a diverse range of weapons. Among these, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow is particularly notable due to its unique system that lets you acquire abilities from defeated monsters in addition to various types of weapons such as swords, guns, spears, and whips. Each weapon comes with both disadvantages (like speed) and advantages (like range), adding a strategic element to gameplay by encouraging players to weigh the pros and cons of different weapon types over raw stats. This sets the game apart from other action RPGs, as players must frequently consider the tactical implications of their chosen weapons.
Elden Ring
An Open-Wolrd Revolution
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the monumental stride FromSoftware has taken in their Soulslike genre with Elden Ring. This time around, they’ve crafted an expansive open-world for us to conquer, and it feels incredible to have more freedom than ever before to traverse this realm, battle fearsome creatures, gather precious loot, and even team up with fellow adventurers online. It’s a gaming experience like no other!
There’s a wide variety of traditional weapons such as swords, spears, hammers, and bows, yet there are also quite a few unique ones. Twinblades are essentially double-edged swords, Reapers resemble scythes, Whips speak for themselves, and Thrusting Shields serve both offensive and defensive purposes.
Monster Hunter Wilds
Crafting Your Way Through Life
In the Monster Hunter Wilds game, although it doesn’t boast the largest arsenal among franchise titles, the fourteen weapons it offers are robust and versatile enough to satisfy every type of player. Whether you’re a newcomer or an experienced hunter, there’s something here for everyone. While the Hammer, Lance, and Bow are reliable choices (admittedly, not the most exciting), Monster Hunter Wilds showcases some unique and appealing standout weapons as well.
The Insect Glaive is a unique, double-edged weapon that not only slashes enemies but also propels players high into the air, spinning around like an enchanted aerial dancer battling monsters. On the other hand, the Charge Blade begins as a sword and shield duo, but transforms into a deadly spinning blade of destruction. The weight and accuracy of these weapon types are truly exceptional.
This version maintains the original meaning while using simpler language and more descriptive phrasing to help create a clearer image for readers.
Warriors Orochi 3
The Ultimate Crossover
Any Musou game features numerous characters wielding diverse weapons. If you’re drawn to Chinese-inspired weapons and mythology, then “Dynasty Warriors: Origins” could be your choice. For those who prefer Japanese culture and samurai weapons, “Samurai Warriors 5” is highly recommended. Additionally, there are spin-offs such as “Hyrule Warriors” and “Persona 5 Strikers”. Among all, “Warriors Orochi 3” stands out as it unites characters from both “Dynasty Warriors” and “Samurai Warriors”, offering a chaotic battlefield filled with weapons like Sickles, Nunchaku, Iron Fans, and many more.
