Atomfall: Secrets of Survival in a Mysterious Quarantine Zone

The survival-action game in development by Rebellion, titled Atomfall, presents a unique alternate history of northern England. Imagine if the Windscale nuclear incident from 1957 had unfolded differently – that’s the setting for this captivating game. As more details about Atomfall emerge, excitement surrounding it continues to grow due to its blending of various genres.

In a chat with Game Rant, Ben Fisher from Rebellion discussed aspects of the game ‘Atomfall’, focusing on its world structure and mechanics. He elaborated on how ‘Atomfall’ handles NPC interactions and dialogue choices, as well as the decisions players can make within the game. For the sake of clarity and conciseness, this interview has been condensed.

Atomfall’s Quarantine Zone is Filled With Mysteries to Solve

A: In what way might the viewpoint of a character with lost memories benefit both the players and the main narrative?

In the game Atomfall’s quarantine zone, players will stumble upon numerous enigmas to unravel. The initial mystery they’ll encounter is about their own identity, but we present this as a moral dilemma – “What kind of person are you?” This is tied to one of our storylines: Actions speak louder than words; it’s not who you claim to be that matters, but what you do. This setup also places the player in a distinct role within the game world, as they find themselves in an uneasy equilibrium where their actions may sway the balance in the Quarantine Zone. As an outsider, people are cautious and curious about them, providing the player with an opportunity to potentially influence the situation one way or another.>

How Atomfall Characterizes its NPCs

Q: How did you approach NPCs? Can you tell us about the most important NPCs players will meet?

A: In creating dialogues for Atomfall, we aimed to develop characters that seemed authentic, with each one making decisions they believed were right amidst difficult situations. We structured our conversations to flow smoothly and allow topics to be initiated or closed based on the player’s interaction skills, similar to real-life conversations.

In the universe of Atomfall, you’ll encounter characters with varying degrees of influence and responsibility for the events unfolding. The significance of each character will ultimately be determined by your decisions. One of the earliest individuals you might meet is Nat Buckshaw, who seems to pass his time strumming a guitar in the remnants of an ancient residence. He’s quite loquacious and eager to share all he knows, but it’s up to you to determine if he can be trusted!

Question: In general, how did you handle character creation in Atomfall? Did you aim for a more grounded, realistic portrayal, or perhaps a more eccentric, Fallout-like approach?

In our portrayal of the characters within Atomfall, we often employ terms like ‘unusual’ and ‘offbeat’. Notably, these individuals have been separated from society for a span of five years, allowing them to pursue their unique paths independently. We’ve given thought to how this isolation could influence them, and it’s accurate to say that in some respects, it has taken on a similar dynamic as depicted in Lord of the Flies. This aligns with the British fiction we drew inspiration from – authentic yet somewhat peculiar!

Atomfall’s Factions Explained

A: Could you share some details on the various groups players may encounter and engage in battles with? What were the key considerations when crafting Atomfall’s genetically-altered beasts, cult members, renegade soldiers, and mechanical entities?

As a devoted fan, one faction I encountered early on is Protocol. Initially, they were the government-backed response team established for public safety. However, after five years, their perspective has taken a turn for the worse, transforming them into a more authoritarian regime as they strive to govern the inhabitants of the quarantine zone. In crafting the diverse characters and factions, we drew heavily from our inspirations.

The protocol mirrors the espionage and government control that were deeply entrenched in British culture during the 50s and 60s, much like a druidic group draws inspiration not just from folk horror but also from ancient Greek and Roman accounts of Britain’s druidic past. Additionally, our creature designs are heavily influenced by early shows such as “Doctor Who” or “The Quatermass Experiment” – they maintain a grounded yet exaggerated feel, presenting an otherworldly aspect while maintaining a scientific basis.

Q: What can you tell us about Oberon, if anything? Who or what are they?

A: Well, that would be telling! It will be down to the player to find out who (or what) Oberon is.

Q: What is the British Atomic Research Division, and how does it impact and influence the story?

Initially, B.A.R.D., or the organization that managed the Windscale nuclear facility before an incident, has splintered into various groups. Some members collaborate with Protocol, pursuing research while maintaining order within the quarantine area. However, the event has impacted other B.A.R.D. individuals differently, leading them to seek their own version of events. The player must determine whom to trust and ally with in this scenario.

How Atomfall Handles Dialogue and Choice

Question: What’s the purpose behind Atomfall’s dialogue choices, and how significantly does player decision-making influence the plot, both in dialogues and overall?

Interacting with the characters in Atomfall plays a crucial role in uncovering clues, but it’s important to discern if the information shared during these interactions can be relied upon. Two characters might have conflicting accounts of events and will attempt to convince you that their version is accurate. This applies not only to the person you speak with at the pub, but also to a vague voice on the other end of a phone call.

A: How do various factors determine the choices we see in dialogues? For instance, they can be friendly, menacing, or desperate. Are these the only three options throughout the game, or does the game provide additional options based on specific quests or actions?

As a fan, I appreciate how the tones in this system mimic real-life conversations, where you might select an option that doesn’t quite align with the writer’s intended reaction due to the way it’s delivered. Recognizing the significance of our dialogues, we aimed to provide players with consistent choices. The tones offered are diverse and tailored for each conversation; they reflect a variety of responses based on what was previously said, ensuring a dynamic and realistic interaction experience.

One perspective could be that the other person also has their own objectives during the conversation, and the tone they use can indicate various possible responses. There’s no specific guideline we follow, such as a “friendliness gauge” that adjusts based on general friendliness or similar concepts. Instead, you must rely on your instincts to navigate the interaction effectively.

Atomfall’s Core Story Themes Explained

Q: Overall, what are the core themes of Atomfall’s story?

Unraveling Atomfall
Atomfall presents a captivating enigma that challenges players to unearth the truth behind an incident reminiscent of the Windscale Incident in our world. The journey delves into understanding one’s identity and interpreting the environment, which serves as the core narrative. This is not a tale about finding the perfect solution or right answers, but rather navigating through challenges with uncertain outcomes – consequences being the only constant.

Q: Are there multiple endings to Atomfall?

Sure thing!

A: Absolutely, there are several different conclusions based on your decisions throughout the game. Due to the fact that certain choices lock out others, you may need multiple playthroughs to witness them all. Despite the various branches, the narrative feels like a cohesive journey from beginning to end, with all the paths interconnected.

How the 1960s Influenced Atomfall

In a simpler and more conversational style, “What impact did the 1960s have on the story’s themes, characters, and settings?

The cultural atmosphere of the 1950s and 1960s significantly impacted the game “Atomfall”. Players will notice a strong influence from science-fiction of that time, such as “Day of the Triffids”, “Doctor Who”, and “The Quatermass Experiment”. The literature of the era delved into themes like paranoia, unease, government mistrust, urbanization concerns, loss of tradition, and maintaining composure amidst immense perils. These elements all seeped into the world of “Atomfall”.

Q: How did you approach creating this quarantine zone to also represent the UK at a time?

To create an authentic experience for those traveling to Cumbria, England, we designed the quarantine zone to resemble the actual landscape. Consequently, Atomfall features expansive moorlands, thick forests, rugged cliffs, charming English hamlets, and more.

Atomfall’s Map and Biomes Explained

A: Could you share some insights into your overall approach to designing interconnected maps, and how this strategy benefits Atomfall specifically?

In the creation of Rebellion games, we follow an “observe, strategize, act” principle, aiming to provide the player with a primary goal while offering them the liberty to explore and tell their unique story within a richly interconnected game environment in Atomfall. We’ve strengthened this approach by leveraging lessons from our Sniper Elite series, ensuring that the strategy of a sniper mission is woven throughout the entire game.

A: Could you share some information on the different biomes depicted in your smaller maps? How were you able to maintain a unique identity for each biome, such as the lush, green landscapes of the United Kingdom?

In each biome, you’ll notice a unique appearance and atmosphere, with varying types of adversaries, factions, and creatures inhabiting them. This enables us to establish separate regions with their own identity and character. For instance, expansive areas are now occupied by wandering gangs, fostering a feeling of post-apocalyptic struggle. Conversely, secluded places such as Casterfell Woods emphasize horror folklore aspects, intensifying the sense of eeriness.

Q: What can you tell us about Wyndham Village? What should players expect from this town?

Wyndham Village exudes a ‘stay strong and move forward’ British spirit; even though it has been isolated for five years, its residents are resolute in maintaining a ‘regular’ lifestyle. However, upon delving deeper and conversing with locals over drinks at the pub, you’ll discover that there’s a hidden depth to this idyllic scene. When visiting Wyndham, make sure to drop by the church!
