Summary
- RPG elements are now prominent in most games, making the genre much bigger and more diverse.
- Shooter genre has seen an increase in RPG elements, with titles like Deus Ex and Cyberpunk 2077.
- RPG shooters like Immortals of Aveum are pushing boundaries by replacing guns with magic spells for unique gameplay.
Enthusiasts of role-playing games (RPGs) from the 80s and 90s generally found the genre to be quite predictable, with distinct subcategories such as turn-based, tactical, dungeon-crawlers, and action RPGs. Fast forward to today, and you’ll notice that a variety of games incorporate role-playing elements, making RPGs a significantly more prevalent and versatile genre in the gaming world.
Over the years, the action-shooter genre has expanded to include numerous Role Playing Games (RPGs), particularly during the high-definition era when consoles like the PS3 and Xbox 360 were popular. Now, it’s challenging to imagine a time without blend of FPS (First Person Shooter) and RPG games, often referred to as RPG shooters. To help us appreciate these titles, let’s evaluate the top-rated FPS-RPG hybrids based on their overall quality and assess whether they still stand the test of time.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Play It Your Way
In essence, “Deus Ex: Human Revolution” is predominantly a stealth game that offers an immersive sim experience, yet it boasts rich role-playing game (RPG) features. The game allows players to approach most situations in the way they prefer, which includes their reboot and sequel, titled “Deus Ex: Mankind Divided“.
In this game, you can enhance the main character, Adam Jensen, by adding advanced cybernetics. These upgrades can improve his aiming precision and boost his hacking capabilities. If you prefer action, the gunplay is satisfying, but for those who enjoy a more covert approach, the stealth aspect of the game is where it truly shines.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
D&D Meets Borderlands
In simpler terms, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a standalone game inspired by a downloadable content (DLC) from the second Borderlands game. The popularity of this DLC led to the creation of a complete game, where the focus remains on gathering weapons, but now set in an imaginative fantasy realm instead.
By incorporating magical and melee weapons into the traditional Borderlands gaming experience, as well as including a larger map, the series has been given a fresh feel while still preserving its distinctive brand of humor. While it offers the best gameplay in the franchise to date, it also shares some of the same problems as previous installments, such as an abundance of loot and enemies that seem to withstand countless bullets.
Immortals Of Aveum
Gun-Based Magic
In Aveum’s Immortals, the focus on fantastical elements was more intense compared to Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. The intriguing notion was posed: What if enchantments took over as our weapons? Initially, it might seem absurd, but the execution surpassed expectations, and the “weapon-play” is undeniably compelling, making this game a must-try for anyone who’s curious.
In the game, instead of traditional weapons like machine guns and rocket launchers, there are magical-like items that players can find and enhance. Players also have the option to engage in close combat and defend against enemies using shields, resulting in a more engaging shooter experience compared to many others.
Fallout 4
Post-Apocalyptic Mayhem
As a devoted fan, I’d argue that while not everyone might consider Fallout 4 the crown jewel of the Fallout series, it truly shines when it comes to its exceptional gunplay. Compared to games like Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, the gunplay in Fallout 4 was a significant leap forward, offering players a more diverse and intriguing arsenal to experiment with.
At designated workstations, players can customize and create unique weapons for themselves. Furthermore, personalizing one’s robotic exosuit to maximize damage against surface-world mutants is possible, providing a level of destruction that’s hard to beat. With the right equipment, the thrill lies in obliterating opponents with powerful laser weaponry and witnessing them disintegrate.
Cyberpunk 2077
Immerse Yourself In The Future
Human Revolution, offer a “choose-your-own-adventure” experience, but what sets Cyberpunk apart is the enhanced enjoyment derived from its cyberpunk-themed weapons and futuristic technology.
As a gaming enthusiast, diving into the chaotic world of Night City or its vast desert expanse feels like an exhilarating adventure. I can’t help but imagine a spinoff team from CD Projekt Red crafting a gripping first-person shooter akin to the intensity of Call of Duty. The gunplay in this hypothetical game is already so solid, it makes me believe that players would still enjoy immersing themselves in the slower-paced RPG experience the game offers. The meticulous attention to detail in character and narrative progression only adds to my excitement for such a potential masterpiece.
The Outer Worlds
Science Is Power
Obsidian Entertainment applied lessons gleaned from their work on Fallout: New Vegas and translated their unique storytelling techniques to a space-themed setting within a corporate-dominated reality. The ambiance of The Outer Worlds, while grim, is livened up by its wit and humor.
In the realm of future technology, there’s an array of intriguing weaponry to explore, such as laser-equipped rifles and pistols. However, it’s the Science Weapons that are stealing the show. For instance, one pistol can miniaturize foes, and another can agglomerate enemies into a large, gooey mass. Fortunately, it appears that Obsidian Entertainment is focusing more on the Science Weapons in The Outer Wilds 2.
Borderlands 2
Classes, Guns, And One Heck Of An Evil Villain
In the Borderlands series, none of the games are as tough to conquer as Borderlands 2. This sequel delivers everything you’d expect from a follow-up, and it’s particularly notable because downloadable content (DLC) has expanded its initial four character classes more than any other game in the series so far.
In simpler terms, the game “Borderlands 2” features wackier weapons, a more diverse and expansive world, and a popular character named Handsome Jack who played a key role in advancing the storyline. This character was so well-received that he had his own prequel. Thanks to modern adaptations, you can easily play “Borderlands 2” today on numerous platforms since its initial release in 2012.
Destiny 2
Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop
In the realm of First-Person Shooter Role-Playing Games (FPS RPG), Destiny 2 stands tall as the main competitor to Borderlands 2. While they coexist in distinct gaming arenas, Borderlands 2 persists due to being ported across platforms, and Destiny 2 continues thriving thanks to regular updates and expansions as a dynamic, ever-evolving game.
Since its debut in 2017, Destiny 2 has experienced some ups and downs; however, one might contend that due to Bungie’s recent strategic decisions, the game is currently stronger than ever before. Reflecting on Destiny 2’s evolution since its launch is truly awe-inspiring. At its core, it continues to offer an outstanding first-person shooter experience with robust RPG elements and exceptional cooperative features that have kept players engaged.
