Game Pass Makes Developers ‘Wage Slaves’, Former PlayStation Boss Says

In simpler terms, a previous head from PlayStation recently voiced his opinion about Game Pass. He expressed that it doesn’t motivate game creators as they may feel like they are working in a system similar to being an indentured servant or a wage laborer.

Xbox’s premium subscription service, named Game Pass, grants access to a collection of games for subscribers across consoles, PCs, and cloud platforms. This service continually updates with new additions each month, featuring both big-budget AAA games and smaller independent titles. There’s been debate among many about whether it’s financially beneficial for developers to make their games available through subscription services like Game Pass. Recently, the former head of PlayStation has shared his thoughts on this matter.

Game Pass is ‘Not Creating Value’

In an interview with GameIndustry.Biz, Shawn Layden, the former chairman of Sony Worldwide Studios, openly discussed Game Pass as a service. He pointed out that there’s much debate over Game Pass profitability, but in his opinion, it’s not the most pertinent question. Instead, he suggested that the focus should be on whether Game Pass is beneficial for game developers, not just financially profitable for companies through various accounting tricks and manipulations.

I built you a game for X dollars per hour, now put it on your servers.” In summary, Layden believes that Game Pass isn’t particularly motivating for video game creators.
