As the release date of Pokemon Legends: Z-A draws near on October 16, enthusiasts have two chances to preview the game and discover what awaits them in Lumiose City ahead of time. Attendees at either the Pokemon World Championships or Gamescom will be able to test out Pokemon Legends: Z-A, allowing them an early hands-on experience with the game. Although the demo may not reveal all the game’s tricks, it has the potential to showcase elements that don’t get fully represented in the trailers for Legends: Z-A.

As a die-hard Pokémon fan, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension when Pokémon Legends: Z-A was announced, especially since it’s confined to Lumiose City. The question on everyone’s mind was how they would manage to make this city feel as expansive as the Hisui region in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. With no other parts of the Kalos Region to fall back on, it’ll be interesting to see how they pull it off. Luckily, we’ll get our first glimpse of the Lumiose City map size soon with the upcoming demos. While these demos will only offer a taste of the full game, they’ll definitely give us an idea if the city lives up to expectations.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Map is Promising, But Trailers Can Only Show So Much

In Pokemon Legends: Arceus, players have access to five expansive open zones across the entire Hisui Region, setting high expectations for its successor to build upon. Each zone in Pokemon Legends: Arceus offers a unique environment, filled with diverse terrains for exploration.

In contrast to the free and varied landscapes of Hisui, Pokemon Legends: Z-A finds itself faced with the challenge of transforming the bustling urban environment of Lumiose City into an appealing destination for exploration. The previews for Legends Z-A have highlighted the city’s wealth of content, including daytime Wild Zones where players can capture wild creatures and nighttime Z-A Royale battles against trainers. Moreover, the game promises to let players climb buildings and leap between rooftops, hinting at innovative ways in which Legends: Z-A plans to tackle the city’s constraints. However, it remains unclear from trailers alone how well these features will manage to create a sense of openness similar to that found in Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

Even if it’s a Demo, Players Can Get a Good Feel of Lumiose City’s Scope

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but be intrigued by the sneak peek we get at Pokemon Legends: Z-A during these events, even though it’s just a slice of the game. The details of this demo could potentially give us insights into what the full game might feel like. The cityscape of Lumiose City, divided into what seems to be five distinct zones, bears a striking resemblance to the map layout in Legends: Arceus. While the demo limits players to exploring only one of these zones, or even just a part of one, I believe we can still gain a sense of the overall map by making educated assumptions from our limited experience.

In the upcoming demos for “Legends: Z-A”, we can anticipate movement to play a significant role, as the trailers haven’t given us a glimpse of riding Pokemon, unlike what was seen in “Legends: Arceus”. Although features such as climbing, using the Rotom Phone for gliding, and teleporting from ground points to building rooftops are confirmed within the game, it remains uncertain if these are the only mobility options available or if there are additional ways of moving around that facilitate free-roam exploration similar to “Scarlet and Violet”. It’s possible that “Pokemon Legends: Z-A” is placing more emphasis on battles over exploration compared to its predecessor, but this will be made clear from the upcoming demos.

At present, these demos are exclusively available to individuals attending Pokemon Worlds and Gamescom events. As of now, there’s been no announcement regarding a broader release for public download.
