Fans of Hollow Knight: Silksong can now look forward to some exciting news, as it appears the game is indeed on its way soon. In fact, this year’s Gamescom event will offer an opportunity to play the game, and a release date before the end of 2025 has been confirmed. After waiting patiently for so long, players will finally have the chance to experience Team Cherry’s mysterious sequel.
Although the promotional activities for “Hollow Knight Silksong” are increasing, we still don’t know much about the game’s content. The protagonist this time will be Hornet, a character who played a supporting role in the original “Hollow Knight.” Being the sibling of the first game’s hero, she is expected to offer a distinct acrobatic playstyle compared to the Knight. What makes her intriguing is that her personality and backstory have the potential to shape a completely new narrative, possibly taking the story in an entirely different direction. The way Hornet’s solo journey fits into the broader “Hollow Knight” universe is equally captivating.
Hollow Knight Silksong Should Bring Back the Grimm Troupe
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share that I’m captivated by the enigmatic band known as The Grimm Troupe in Hollow Knight. They are a group of performing insects, living under the watch of the Nightmare’s Heart, an ancient, eldritch entity with mysterious powers. Their role is to cultivate and nurture a Grimmchild, which seems to be essential for battling the Nightmare King. This ritual, steeped in strangeness and otherworldliness, keeps the Nightmare Realm thriving. From a storytelling perspective, The Grimm Troupe significantly enriches the intricate lore of Hollow Knight.
In the game Hollow Knight, players have the power to shape the Grimm Troupe’s mission. Upon completing certain prerequisite tasks, which primarily involve caring for the Grimmchild and readying it for a final ritual, the player can either conclude the ritual by vanquishing the Nightmare King or permanently halt the cycle. Regardless of the outcome, the Grimm Troupe will depart from Dirthmouth, never to be seen again-that is, unless they reappear in Silksong.
Silksong Grimm Troupe Scenario 1: The Tradition Continues
If the game Hollow Knight Silksong were to adopt an element from its predecessor, Hollow Knight, the Grimm Troupe arc appears to be a strong contender as it’s optional content not crucial to the main storyline. Should this occur, Team Cherry would face the challenge of deciding which player-controlled ending will become the official one.
Players have the option to influence or decide the conclusion of the Grimm Troupe questline. This can be achieved through dialogue choices or some other interactive means within the game.
If the sequel to Hollow Knight Silksong adheres to the cooperative ending of the Grimm Troupe quest in the original game, there’s a chance that the cycle could resume in Silksong, albeit with an unexpected twist. Perhaps Hornet will cross paths with the Troupe again, but this time she might not be inclined to assist them, regardless of any promised rewards. Instead, her storyline could revolve around stopping or indirectly influencing the Nightmare Ritual, given her well-defined character and complex motivations.
Silksong Grimm Troupe Scenario 2: The Cycle’s End
An alternative, possibly more intriguing, option could involve the Troupe departing Dirtmouth before completing their destiny. In this case, the Nightmare Lantern would also be shattered, potentially leading the Grimm Troupe to seek new purposes in life, offering a rich array of possibilities for various reasons.
It’s plausible to think that Team Cherry drew inspiration for their Grimm Troupe in “Hollow Knight” from the iconic trilogy of “Dark Souls”. The recurring theme of an eternal cycle, where one must perform perilous and violent actions to maintain it, is a hallmark of FromSoftware’s games. Even the magic fire used in the Grimm Troupe’s rituals mirrors its role in “Dark Souls”. However, unlike “Dark Souls”, the story of the Grimm Troupe is presented from an outside viewpoint and leaves potential for further development. With “Silksong”, Team Cherry may complete this circle.
