The recent visit by US Representatives French Hill and Chrissy Houlahan to Kuje Prison, where Gambaryan is being detained, revealed a critical condition that warrants immediate action.
U.S. legislators persistently request the freedom of Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan, who has been detained by Nigerian authorities. The situation between the cryptocurrency exchange and Nigerian government grew more complex when a group of American congressmembers penned a letter to the White House, urging intervention.
As a researcher studying political developments in Africa, I came across some noteworthy news this week. Two US representatives made a stop at Gamabaryan’s prison during their visit to Nigeria. Upon observing the executive’s state of health, which raised serious concerns, they strongly advocated for his compassionate release based on humanitarian grounds.
US Lawmakers Continue To Call For Action
Thursdays saw US congressmen French Hill and Chrissy Houlahan urging for the immediate release of ex-federal agent Tigran Gambaryan. He and his colleague, Nadeem Anjarwalla, were apprehended by Nigerian law enforcement on February 26. They face allegations of tax evasion and money laundering.
After that incident, numerous politicians and business heads have urged for the freedom of Binance’s executive, Gambaryan. In response, Richard Teng, Binance’s CEO, published a public statement supporting Gambaryan. He clarified that the Nigerian authorities were targeting a Binance employee who hadn’t traveled to Nigeria in a decision-making or negotiating capacity.
Additionally, he alleged that officials manipulated an unsuspecting worker into being used as a pawn against the cryptocurrency platform by authorities. A similar concern was expressed in a missive to President Biden from several US congresspersons.
Sixteen House members implored the Biden administration on June 4th, expressing urgency and warning that action is necessary “before the situation worsens.” They maintained that the allegations against the executive are unfounded and amounted to an attempt by the Nigerian government to pressure his employer, Binance, through extortion.
In the letter, politicians expressed concerns about the executive’s wellbeing, sharing troubling details about his recent health crisis. Following his collapse during a court appearance on May 22nd, rumors emerged regarding Gambaryan’s health condition. He was reportedly diagnosed with malaria and allegedly denied adequate medical care.
Binance Executive’s Condition Remains Critical
According to Bitcoinist, the charges of tax evasion against the Binance executive were dismissed by Nigerian authorities following Binance’s appointment of a local representative to manage the legal conflict regarding the exchange.
Despite having managed to evade detention in March, Gambaryan and Anjarwalla are still wanted for money laundering allegations. Consequently, the executive who was originally taken into custody stays incarcerated at the Kuje Prison in Nigeria.
On June 19, representatives Hill and Houlahan paid a visit to the ex-federal agent in his prison cell. To their concern, they discovered that his health had deteriorated significantly.
According to the article, the politicians traveled to the country for discussions on America’s commitment to supporting Nigeria and other West African nations in their efforts against terrorism from a security perspective.
Hill reported that they utilized the occasion to speak up for the Binance executive and witnessed firsthand the “deplorable prison conditions” in which he was unjustly held. Additionally, the spokesperson disclosed that the executive continued to battle both malaria and double pneumonia.
Gambaryan shared with the politicians that he has shed a considerable amount of weight and continues to be denied proper medical care in spite of the court decree mandating his admission to a healthcare facility for necessary treatment.
After our meeting with Gambaryan, Representatives Hill and Houlahan advocated for his granting of a humanitarian release to facilitate his safe return to the United States.
Immediately releasing Tigran from detention with no further charges and allowing him to return back to the United States is what’s necessary for him.
