EigenLayer’s EigenDA Unveils Whitelist Security Against Sybil Attacks

As a researcher with experience in blockchain technology and data security, I find EigenLayer’s implementation of a whitelist security measure to counter Sybil and DDoS attacks on its free data availability service, EigenDA, an effective solution. This security measure, which employs IP address and/or Ethereum address ECDSA authentication, is crucial in protecting the service while ensuring its availability to all clients.


EigenLayer implemented a protective mechanism, called a whitelist, for its EigenDA data-accessibility solution on the Ethereum primary network. This safeguard is designed to shield against Sybil and DDoS threats through the use of either IP addresses or Ethereum addresses with ECDSA authentication.

EigenDA Unveils Whitelist Security Against Sybil

As a researcher studying the security measures implemented by EigenLayer for their free data availability service, EigenDA, I can explain that to mitigate potential risks, they have adopted a whitelist approach. This strategy employs both IP addresses and Ethereum addresses with ECDSA authentication for user verification. In simpler terms, only authorized users are allowed access to the service based on their unique digital signatures or IP addresses.

By implementing this security feature, EigenLayer aims to shield its users and ensure uninterrupted access to its services for everyone.

On Ethereum’s mainnet, using EigenDA for rollup data is currently free of charge. I encourage all rollups to share their data by posting blobs onto EigenDA.

The present free plan allows for data transfer of up to 768KB within a 10-minute timeframe, which significantly exceeds the needs of the busiest Ethereum rollups at the moment. For instance, Base, a widely-used rollup, generates fewer than 2 data blobs each 10 minutes; consequently, EigenDA’s free plan provides more than sufficient capacity for current demands.

At the same time, EigenDA provides an opportunity for partners to ask for extra processing power beyond the free plan. This adaptability enables us to cater to high-throughput scenarios and encourages diverse applications and advancements.

EigenDA produces synthetic loads amounting to 0.6 MB/sec and has been proven effective in handling peak throughputs of up to 10 MB/sec on the mainnet. Its substantial capacity makes EigenDA a viable choice for Ethereum’s data availability needs due to its scalability.

Ongoing Developments and EIGEN Stake Drop

As a crypto investor, I’m excited about EigenLayer’s progress in developing permissionless payments for blob throughput on EigenDA. By the end of this year, users like myself will be able to securely reserve bandwidth at a fixed rate to accommodate high throughput demands, enhancing the overall efficiency and functionality of the platform.

The Eigen Foundation has initiated the second stage of its EIGEN stake drop, a significant move in the token distribution strategy for the project. Approximately 113 million EIGEN tokens have already been allocated during the first phase to support ongoing development efforts and enhance the project’s Automated Valuation System (AVS).

Tokens cannot be transferred before the end of Q3 2024, despite being claimed. However, users are able to engage in staking and delegation with EigenDA operators via the EigenLayer web platform. At present, EigenDA is the sole AVS that employs an EIGEN quorum, while other AVSs may adopt this mechanism in the near future.
