In the forthcoming battle between Chip ‘n Clawz and The Brainioids, you can expect a thrilling blend of real-time strategy (RTS) and third-person action gameplay, all wrapped up in a vibrant sci-fi setting. Drawing inspiration from classic pulp science fiction comics and B-movies, Chip ‘n Clawz promises to deliver a humorous and strategic gaming experience.
In a collaboration between Snapshot Games and Arc Games, the game titled “Chip ‘n Clawz vs. The Brainioids” offers an engaging blend of third-person action and real-time strategy (RTS) gameplay. Players are thrust into a narrative where they must fend off an alien invasion by the Brainioids, while leading their own mechanical army. Team members from Snapshot Games, including game director Julian Gollop and game designer Nikola Petrov, recently discussed the game with Game Rant. During the conversation, they provided insights about Chip, the inventor who controls the player’s machine army.
Chip ‘n Clawz’ Chip Explained
An Inventor With An Ancient Lineage
In the game “Chip ‘n Clawz“, Chip serves as the principal character. He’s a young and innovative genius who faces a colossal task – fending off an alien invasion. Alongside his robotic feline companion, Clawz, Chip showcases his inventive abilities not just as a characteristic trait, but in practice. He is responsible for creating not only Clawz but also an array of robot minions that players can utilize to arm against the Brainioid forces. This game introduces a Real-Time Strategy (RTS) component, similar to games like “Minecraft Legends“.

In the process of discussing the characters in the game, designer Nikola Petrov delved into the background of the character Chip. As the principal figure of the game, Chip plays a crucial role due to his co-starring with another character, Clawz. Since the game Chip ‘n Clawz is fronted by a duo like those in games such as Ratchet and Clank or Banjo-Kazooie, it’s essential for both protagonists to be unique while also having distinct, lively personalities capable of creating an engaging dynamic. Petrov shared insights into how the team found an idea that would help define Chip when designing him:
Originally, Chip was designed to have a more contemporary and fashionable appearance. He sported a stylish vest, messy hair, and flashy sneakers. However, we felt that his overall demeanor didn’t quite align with his character. To find a suitable fit, we drew inspiration from our own game world. The early parts of the game feature remnants of an ancient civilization, along with collectible comic books. This led us to wonder if a descendant of these ancient people could be a modern-day boy fascinated by robotics. That was our “aha” moment. Our concept artists then gave him tattoos that resembled the ancient ruins, his wavy hair and scarf added fluidity to his movements, and his jumper and engineering accessories made him appear like a contemporary do-it-yourself enthusiast or kit-basher.
In simpler terms, the history and ancestry of Chip’s people could provide insight into his character development. The initial trailer for “Chip ‘n Clawz” shows that ancient representations of the Brainioids are being scrutinized by invading aliens, suggesting that these ancient ruins might hold clues about a past invasion by the same alien faction. This could mean that Chip’s ancestors may have been involved in a previous conflict with the Brainioids.
Though the game is reminiscent of Tim Burton’s “Mars Attacks!” in terms of visual style and tone, suggesting a fun and entertaining experience, Chip stands out due to his heavy inheritance from his ancestors – a responsibility to vanquish the Brainioid threat. This legacy could add layers of depth to his character.

In simpler terms, Julian Gollop, the mastermind behind X-COM, shared additional insights about the player’s interaction with characters Chip and Clawz in Chip ‘n Clawz. He suggested that through their conversations, players will get to know these characters quite intimately. The game promises a substantial amount of storyline and character development, and it remains intriguing to see how it will leverage Chip’s background and creative abilities.
