Legendary Developer Ron Gilbert Reveals New Game at Gamescom ONL

The newest game from renowned developer Ron Gilbert is called “Scrolling-Induced Demise.

Ron Gilbert, an American video game developer, is primarily recognized for creating the beloved “Monkey Island” series. He embarked on his career at Lucasfilm Games in the 1980s and boasts more than 100 credits to his name, spanning projects like “Maniac Mansion,” “Total Annihilation: The Core Contingency,” “Ollo in the Sunny Valley Fair,” and “The Big Big Castle.” More recently, he collaborated on the design, direction, and script for the 2022 release of “Return to Monkey Island,” the latest installment in his highly successful franchise.

In the game “Death by Scrolling,” the character of the Grim Reaper symbolically underscores its deeper themes since it’s set in a unique realm called Purgatory, which seems to be a fusion of various cultures’ depictions of death and the afterlife. Characters stuck there are required to pay a substantial amount of gold, 10,000 pieces, to a Ferryman before they can advance. To accumulate this sum, they must repeatedly traverse the constantly changing landscape of Purgatory, laying the groundwork for “Death by Scrolling”‘s roguelike gameplay cycle.

The game titled “Death by Scrolling” offers various playable characters, boasts retro-style pixel art graphics, and comes with online scoreboards. Humorous dialogue, a hallmark of Gilbert’s work, is incorporated into the game. Players are encouraged to continue running upwards throughout the game, but the announcement trailer suggests that simply doing so without caution may not ensure safety, as the Grim Reaper can unexpectedly appear from above too.

Before its debut at Gamescom 2025, the game titled “Death by Scrolling” was hinted at by Gilbert towards the end of 2024 when he disclosed that his studio, Terrible Toybox, intended to release it within a few months. However, it’s evident now that this launch timeline has been pushed back since then. The official website currently lists “Death by Scrolling” as scheduled for a late 2025 release. The forthcoming game, which MicroProse Software will publish, has thus far only been unveiled for PC platforms.
