It seems that a console, long speculated to be running on SteamOS and known as The Valve Fremont, has been spotted on a widely-used benchmarking site called Geekbench. This sighting follows the ongoing chatter suggesting that Valve may be planning to re-enter the steam console market.
As per Geekbench’s records, the Valve Fremont comes equipped with a six-core, 12-thread processor that operates at a base speed of 3.2 GHz. Furthermore, the tested model includes 8GB of DDR5 RAM.
Keep in mind that simply because a device shows up on Geekbench doesn’t guarantee all its specifications are fully confirmed. There may be modifications between when the test results appear and when the product is officially announced or launched. For instance, the benchmark indicates it runs Windows 11 Pro, but the final product would likely use SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system.
A Long Time Coming?
Speculations about a potential new gaming console from Valve, named Steam Console, have been buzzing around for several months now. A well-known Valve insider, Brad Lynch, has discussed the gadget extensively and provided additional details following its appearance on Geekbench.
As per Lynch’s explanation, Valve Fremont is essentially a PC gaming console or box, primarily designed for television use, that operates on SteamOS. This device boasts a dedicated HDMI port. Furthermore, it’s important to note that the CPU of this semi-custom unit is based on Hawk Point 2, although the integrated graphics processing unit (GPU) has been excluded.
In conclusion, regarding the graphics card, it’s an AMD RX 7600 model specifically designed for a personalized Valve case.
Upon its launch, Valve Fremont is anticipated, as per Lynch’s statements, to debut concurrently with the “Ibex” controller, the “Deckard” VR headset, and the “Roy” controllers.
It’s not clear if the Fremont console from Valve actually exists, but since some official benchmark data have appeared online, there’s a strong possibility that we might soon get an official confirmation about it.
