The PS4 game Bloodborne surpassed expectations of fans familiar with the Dark Souls series, offering similar mechanics such as saving and leveling up at designated areas while also incurring progress loss upon death. However, it distinctly stood out with its Lovecraftian gothic fantasy ambiance, reminiscent of a Castlevania game that might have been crafted by H.P. Lovecraft himself.
The game titled “Bloodborne” was initially launched exclusively on the PlayStation 4. Although it can be played on PlayStation 5 systems, enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating its release on other consoles or a sequel. Since neither of these developments has occurred yet, fans might also consider waiting for similar Souls-like games that seem to emulate the aesthetic and gameplay style reminiscent of “Bloodborne“.
Code Vein 2
Time Traveling Vampires
The game known as Code Vein initially hit the market in 2019. It presented a unique setting featuring vampire-esque characters thriving in a post-apocalyptic environment alongside humans who had been genetically altered and struggled with blood-based transformations. Notably, the game’s distinctive features included an extensive focus on blood magic, as well as a consistently accessible AI companion for cooperative play that significantly contributed to its appeal.
In the upcoming sequel, “Code Vein 2”, the gameplay style remains familiar, yet includes an intriguing new element that hasn’t been clearly detailed, hinting at a possible involvement of time travel within the storyline. This game leans more towards anime elements compared to “Bloodborne”, however, both retain some similar visual styles. Players can expect to play it on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S sometime in 2026.
The Duskbloods
A Clear Homage
It’s quite evident that “The Duskbloods” is leading the pack in terms of tributes to “Bloodborne”, given that it’s being developed by FromSoftware. When the trailer was unveiled during the Switch 2 reveal Direct, many viewers speculated that it could be a sequel to “Bloodborne” due to its striking similarities. The game’s gothic aesthetic, character and enemy designs, as well as its overall feel, were strongly reminiscent of “Bloodborne”.
The upcoming game, Duskbloods, is primarily designed for multiplayer experiences, similar to the hypothetical Elden Ring Nightreign, but with a stronger focus on player-versus-player interactions. Although it’s currently exclusive to Switch 2 and has yet to announce a release date or provide further updates since its initial announcement, the game still sparks enthusiasm among FromSoftware enthusiasts who are eager to give it a try.
Mistfall Hunter
A Souls Extractor
As a gaming enthusiast, I’d say that “Mistfall Hunter” resonates with me quite a bit like “The Duskbloods” does. Both games seem to be centered around the thrill of multiplayer action. Specifically, “Mistfall Hunter” offers an adrenaline-pumping experience as an extraction shooter, infused with elements reminiscent of Soulslike games. The unique blend of genres in this game is quite intriguing, and from the trailers I’ve seen, it appears to be a chilling, intense adventure that I can hardly wait to dive into.
The game features imposing, ominous gates, cults for worship, and numerous enemies eager to be defeated. As of now, it’s planned to launch on PC and Xbox Series X/S in 2025. However, due to the approaching year-end, there might be a delay, though predictions are uncertain.
Mortal Shell 2
Be A Husk Once More
The original Mortal Shell appeared as if it had just been released recently, but it was actually in the year 2021. What truly set this game apart from others in the Souslikes series was that players could possess different bodies, each functioning somewhat like classes in other action RPGs. The upcoming sequel, Mortal Shell 2, scheduled for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2026, seems to be an expansive continuation of this concept.
In the new installment, you’ll find larger beasts, a wider array of weapons, and an undeniable atmosphere that strongly suggests “Stay far away!” Cold Symmetry, who impressed us with their work on the original game, are now inviting fans to step up and explore the sequel. They ask for your trust as they continue their creative journey.
Prison Of Husks
If The PS1 Had Bloodborne
- Developer: Glass Head Dolls
- Publisher: Glass Head Dolls
- Platform: PC
One of the most exciting trends in independent gaming has seen several games styled to resemble PlayStation 1 titles. For instance, in 2024, the horror game “Crow Country” stands out as an impressive example. Similarly, “Prison of Husks” appears reminiscent of a de-made version of “Bloodborne,” or a game similar to the “Dark Souls” series.
The quality is low intentionally, as intended. You can preview Prison of Husks immediately on Steam, although it currently lacks a set release date or expansion to other platforms besides PC. It might be some time before its launch, but given the visuals, it’s worth keeping an eye on.
Stonemachia
Chess Anyone?
- Developer: Crossfall Games
- Publisher: Crossfall Games
- Platform: PC
Stonemachia appears to be a blend of LittleBigPlanet and a Soulslike game in terms of its style. The characters are designed as chess pieces but with a touch of rounded edges, reminiscent of the cartoon-like Sackboy models from LittleBigPlanet.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve recently stumbled upon Stonemachia on Steam, and let me tell you, its demo is quite intriguing! Unlike Prison of Husks, there’s no concrete release date or platform beyond PC announced yet. But hey, not every game needs to follow the footsteps of a classic like Bloodborne, right?
The art style of Stonemachia might not be as chilling, but don’t let that fool you. Just like the Little Nightmares series, appearances can be misleading when it comes to horror games with a more child-friendly vibe. So, I’m eagerly waiting for its full release and ready to dive back into another eerie adventure!
Valor Mortis
Give Napoleon A Piece Of Your Mind
At the Gamescom’s Opening Night Live Event, the latest game announced is titled “Valor Mortis“. Scheduled to release in 2026 across platforms such as PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, this highly anticipated title captures attention regardless of genre. The intriguing premise for this game places an ex-soldier who served under Napoleon in France, pitted against countrymen and adversaries who have been mutated.
What the game Bloodborne excelled at was blending elements reminiscent of our real world into its diverse locales. Valor Mortis is taking it a step further by crafting an alternate universe filled with both gunfights and swordplay, as well as magic. Fans of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Bioshock may find this game particularly appealing.
