Hollow Knight Breaks Player Count Milestone After Silksong Release Date Announcement

The popular game Hollow Knight saw its highest number of players simultaneously logged in on Steam after the official announcement of when Silksong would be released. With Silksong being one of the most anticipated games of 2025, it appears that fans are getting ready for its launch by giving Hollow Knight another playthrough before the new game drops.

The much-anticipated sequel to Hollow Knight, titled Silksong, is set to launch on September 4 after a laborious seven-year development process. Silksong was first unveiled in 2019, two years following the debut of the original Hollow Knight, leading many fans to assume that its release was imminent. However, the prolonged wait since then has built up quite the excitement within the community, making the official announcement of its release date a significant event.

Hollow Knight Reaches All-time Peak Concurrent Player Count On Steam

As the launch of Silksong draws near, many enthusiasts have revisited the original Hollow Knight, with novices joining in, eagerly diving into it as a prelude to the sequel. Data from SteamDB reveals that more than 23,000 gamers are currently enjoying Hollow Knight on Steam, signaling a significant upsurge in interest following the recent announcement, with a staggering 150% surge over just a few days. When it debuted in 2017, Hollow Knight didn’t initially garner many players, given its status as an indie game created by a small team lacking a substantial marketing budget. However, since then, Hollow Knight has earned a reputation as one of the finest Metroidvania games ever made, having sold over 15 million copies to date.

In a recent interview, Team Cherry shared insights on why it took seven years to create Hollow Knight: Silksong. The developers clarified that the game didn’t languish in development limbo; instead, their small team enjoyed the creative process of expanding the platformer with fresh ideas due to the initial game’s success. Although they had the means to continue indefinitely by adding more content, they eventually chose to halt development and release the game in September 2025.

It seems that fans of Hollow Knight: Silksong might look forward to additional content, as creators Ari Gibson and William Pellen from Team Cherry have hinted at potential DLC for the game. Previously, Silksong was intended as a DLC for the original Hollow Knight, and it remains unclear what new features or areas will be incorporated into this highly anticipated Metroidvania sequel.
