Hollow Knight and Silksong May Be on Opposites Ends of the Spectrum With Their Stories

As a devoted fan, I’ve eagerly awaited Team Cherry’s masterpiece, the enchanting Metroidvania title, Hollow Knight: Silksong, for over six years now. While we’ve been patiently waiting for any news about its release date, our dreams finally came true recently when Team Cherry dropped a new trailer on their official YouTube channel!

In the trailer, they confirmed that Hollow Knight: Silksong will launch on September 4, 2025. Although some of us had hoped for an unexpected early release (or a “shadowdrop”), knowing that we’ll finally get our hands on this stunning game in just two weeks was more than enough to ignite excitement among the Hollow Knight: Silksong community!

Despite the anticipation for Hollow Knight: Silksong to release early next month, Team Cherry has maintained a veil of secrecy over the game’s storyline. The three trailers released so far offer only limited glimpses into the game and its plot, leaving fans eager for more information. Interestingly, the demo showcased at Gamescom 2025 was remarkably similar to the one from E3 2019, shedding little new light on the game’s details. However, based on what is known so far, it appears that the narrative of Silksong will be a stark contrast to its precursor in certain aspects.

Hollow Knight: Silksong Seems to Have a More Hopeful Narrative than Hollow Knight

In the sequel named “Hollow Knight: Silksong”, we’ll delve into the journey of Hornet, the significant character from the original “Hollow Knight”. After the happenings of the prior game, Hornet gets abducted by mysterious insects originating from another realm and transported to Pharloom, a kingdom characterized by silk and melodies. Even before reaching her designated location, Hornet manages to escape her confinement and navigates through the surrounding areas. Throughout this perilous voyage to the top of Pharloom, Hornet uncovers more about herself and her history.

In the initial game called “Hollow Knight”, players would journey downwards into the realm of Hallownest. On the other hand, in the sequel titled “Hollow Knight: Silksong”, players will climb their way up to reach the summit of Pharloom.

Hornet Will Be Restoring the Hope of a Kingdom in Hollow Knight: Silksong

It’s not entirely certain what Hornet is seeking at Pharloom’s summit, but on the official store page for “Hollow Knight: Silksong,” it is mentioned that the princess is assigned with reviving the kingdom’s hope. This might imply that there is some unique artifact or significant individual residing at Pharloom’s peak, who can aid Hornet in rejuvenating her kingdom. Despite the specifics, it appears that “Hollow Knight: Silksong” has a more optimistic and cheerful storyline compared to the gloomier plot of “Hollow Knight.

The Original Hollow Knight’s Plot Was Darker and Centered Primarily Around the Cycle of Doom

Beneath the playful, bug-filled veneer of “Hollow Knight” lies a deep narrative centered around despair and the cycle that perpetuates it. The game lets players take control of an unnamed warrior, known as the Knight, who ventures into Hallownest – a realm plagued by a mysterious illness called the Infection. This affliction not only strips the affected bugs of their free will but also drives them mad, transforming them into undead creatures. As the Knight, players must eliminate “Hollow Knight’s” Dreamers and face the origin of the Infection, which resides within the enigmatic Hollow Knight itself.

Hollow Knight and Silksong Seem to Handle the Same Concept in Different Ways

In contrast to the original Hollow Knight and its sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, both featuring bug protagonists on a quest to save their kingdom, portray different approaches to the storyline. The kingdom of Hallownest in the initial game is beyond salvation, being a decimated and ruined place. Conversely, Pharloom, the kingdom in Hollow Knight: Silksong, appears to have some life left and may potentially be restored to its former grandeur. Although specific details are yet to be revealed upon the game’s release, it seems that Silksong’s plot carries a rather optimistic tone overall.
