As a dedicated cinephile of the Borderlands universe, I must say that the unveiling of gameplay for Borderlands 4 left me intrigued. One aspect that caught my attention was the reappearance of Radiation, an element that made its debut in Borderlands 3 but failed to reach the iconic stature of Slag from Borderlands 2’s fifth element. This was partly due to no Vault Hunter being crafted to exploit it fully. However, the recent disclosure of Harlowe’s updated skill trees hints that Borderlands 4 might give Radiation another chance to dazzle us.
In the game Borderlands, instead of explosives, Radiation was introduced as an element in weapon rotations. This type of damage spread among enemies, particularly punishing groups gathered closely, but it fell short in delivering a visually striking impact, making it feel no more exceptional than other elements. However, Harlowe’s equipment revitalizes the status effect, providing it with the attention it had been missing in Borderlands 3. With the Creative Bursts skill tree from Harlowe, Radiation takes on a significant role in her damage profile, offering both passive enhancements and active effects that can highlight the element as a key player.
Borderlands 4’s Harlowe Redefines Radiation Through Chain Reaction Chaos
In Borderlands 3, radiation was effectively utilized to link damage between enemies. When an irradiated target perished, it detonated, causing a damaging explosion with the possibility of spreading the effect even further. This intricate aspect added depth to the element’s character. Additionally, it could contaminate bodies of water, creating temporary areas where area-of-effect damage was dealt.
In simpler terms, Radiation was most effective at dispersing tightly packed groups of enemies. Although it had a distinct theme, its performance didn’t improve as much as other elements because it lacked a specific playstyle to boost its impact. However, Harlowe’s abilities in Borderlands 4 fill this gap with certain active skills and passive upgrades, all designed to amplify chances for chain reactions.
Harlowe’s CHROMA Accelerator Means More Explosions, More Often
The core of Harlowe’s ability to combine Radiation effects stems from the Harlowe’s CHROMA Accelerator Action Skill. With this skill, she can shoot an Unstable Energy Pocket that causes Cryo damage to enemies in its path. However, the unique aspect is that reactivating the skill results in a powerful explosion inflicting substantial Radiation damage over a large area. This immediate synergy with her passive trait, Entanglement, which amplifies gun damage on linked enemies affected by her Action Skills, positions Harlowe as a top contender among the Vault Hunters in Borderlands 4.
Harlowe’s Radiation combination power is due to her CHROMA Accelerator Action Skill, which enables her to fire an Unstable Energy Pocket causing Cryo damage to nearby enemies. The standout feature is that using the skill a second time causes a massive explosion dealing heavy Radiation damage across a wide area. This instant synergy with her passive trait Entanglement, which increases gun damage on linked enemies affected by her Action Skills, makes Harlowe one of the top Vault Hunters in Borderlands 4.

Utilizing passive abilities in Harlowe’s Creative Bursts skill tree’s middle branch may amplify her ability to target and emit radiation, potentially creating a powerful late-game Radiation build. The Fissile Launcher passive triggers additional radiation darts at another enemy when Harlowe damages an already irradiated or entangled enemy. Meanwhile, the Dirty Bomb skill causes enemies to detonate upon being hit with the radiation status effect. Lastly, the Demon Core skill escalates the damage by allowing her Unstable Energy Pocket to bombard foes with even more irradiated darts, leading to increased elemental explosions.
Utilizing the Special Purpose Magnets enhancement enables the Harlowe’s Unstable Energy Pocket to draw nearby enemies towards it and subsequently inflict elevated damage on any enemies previously struck upon explosion, as well.
Big Damage and Skill Versatility Mean Harlowe Could Be Borderlands 4’s Best Vault Hunter

What adds even more thrill to her being a Vault Hunter is that Harlowe’s Radiation synergy is just one of her three Action Skills. In addition, she has the ability Zero-Point which can either entangle and freeze enemies solid or slam them into the ground. Furthermore, her Flux Generator creates a Cryo-damage field that boosts allies and also entangles nearby enemies.
The various Action Skills for Harlowe indicate that, even with a high damage output, this character can adapt to offer zone control and team support as well. This adaptability might make Harlowe the most versatile Vault Hunter in the Borderlands series. If this design approach is carried over to all Vault Hunters in Borderlands 4, the game could establish a new benchmark for diversity in endgame character builds.

As a die-hard fan of action-packed games, I must admit that Harlowe’s CHROMA Accelerator in Borderlands 4 has really caught my eye. The combination of managing crowds and the persistent low-level explosions makes it an enticing prospect for delving into what could potentially be the endgame scenario of this upcoming title.
Whether or not it will surpass the iconic elemental builds we’ve seen in previous games is still uncertain, but one thing is clear: Radiation finally has its champion to truly display its destructive prowess. If this new tree indeed lives up to its impressive appearance, Borderlands 4 could breathe new life into one of the franchise’s often overlooked aspects.
