Co-operative gaming has had a long life, is still thriving today, and will continue to do so in the future – especially local co-op. Developers and publishers have been wise to keep it alive due to its popularity, with LEGO being one of the most prominent names in this genre. Their latest co-operative adventure, LEGO Voyagers, appears to have nailed all the right elements, making it a must-see in my Gamescom 2025 preview. Let me guide you through what makes it so special.
As a devoted fan, I’d say experiencing LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game felt like a groundbreaking moment in gaming for me. Two iconic worlds colliding was truly amazing! The opportunity to reenact legendary Star Wars scenes side by side with a friend was the icing on the cake. This game paved the way for an entire series of annual LEGO games, often releasing multiple versions a year. Best part? It allowed friends, couples, and families like mine to bond over cooperative play, making gaming nights even more enjoyable!
In LEGO Voyagers, you and your fellow human gamer embark on an interstellar journey where we’re required to master every trick and brick up our sleeves to conquer challenges, advance, and save a spaceship. Stepping out from my Gamescom 2025 demo, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of admiration for the game – Hazelight Studios would probably be pleased with this stellar creation!
A Stud in Its Own Right
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “LEGO Voyagers is an exclusive two-player adventure that operates on a Friends Pass system, much like the cooperative games Split Fiction, It Takes Two, and A Way Out. This means you only need to purchase one copy of the game, yet you can invite another player to join forces with you. Unlike other games where AI or computer-controlled partners might help out, here it’s all about real human teamwork.
I collaborated with Light Build Studios’ creative director, Karsten Lund, and benefited greatly from his game insights during our partnership. He guided me throughout the process, and I found out that a single button allows for jumping, while pressing the action button lets my character connect to many elements in the surroundings.
In this game, you’ll navigate by grasping onto planks to build bridges, gripping onto fallen debris to cross chasms, and even bonding with your partner in a unique way reminiscent of Olympic Pole Vault events, helping you reach new heights. The platforming segments I managed to complete won’t leave you seeking external assistance or tutorials, but there’s enough challenge to keep you engaged and thinking. “Voyagers” could make an excellent educational tool for young players.
Lund shared with me that as the game progresses, its complexity will increase significantly. This makes the game suitable for both children and adults to play together, which seems very promising. Additionally, you can’t help but find the game adorable. The LEGO-like bricks used in the game, although muted, have a charming appeal that could turn into a successful merchandising opportunity if the game becomes popular – and I believe it will be.
LEGO Voyagers Steps Into The Hazelight
I’m eager to steer clear of being likened to Hazelight Studios. This company, founded by Josef Fares, is highly recognized as a contemporary trailblazer in cooperative gameplay. They craft intricate narratives where two players collaborate to overcome challenges, pushing back against negativity, and ultimately reaching for a profoundly cathartic resolution.
The gameplay of LEGO Voyagers shares a similar, appealing atmosphere, which is noticeable yet not easily dismissible. On the bright side, this isn’t necessarily a negative aspect. I find myself appreciating what Hazelight accomplishes, and the fact that over 30-40 million copies of their first three games were sold indicates that the public shares my enthusiasm as well.
I genuinely enjoy playing cooperative games with my partner (who’s getting married to me). This has been the case for quite some time. The LEGO Voyagers series caters to a broad audience and is highly approachable. Based on my experience, I don’t believe that LEGO Voyagers will revolutionize gaming, but it doesn’t have to because it’s LEGO, it’s delightful, visually appealing, and quite entertaining.
Head over to TopMob’s discussion board to voice your opinions about cooperative gaming. Are developments similar to those from Hazelight and Annapurna/Light Brick Studio on the right track? I’d love to hear your thoughts, too. By the way, don’t forget to share your impressions of my LEGO Voyagers sneak peek!
There are additional previews available for Gamescom 2025, featuring titles like Under Par Golf Architect, Valor Mortis, Super Meat Boy 3D, Hell Let Loose Vietnam, Borderlands 4, Hollow Knight: Silksong, and G’AIM’E. You can look forward to reading more about these upcoming games!
