With developers at TiMi Studios who were avid fans of earlier titles like Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, it seems the series is being handled competently.
Game Rant recently had a chat with Delta Force’s game design director, Ricky Liao, about the game’s focus on returning to the series’ original gameplay mechanics and design principles. Liao explained that he aimed to maintain certain essential elements from the original Delta Force in this modern version, which has been appreciated by fans who enjoy Delta Force’s unique blend of combined arms combat.
Liao Has Been a Fan of Delta Force From the Start
Liao shared that he’s been captivated by the Delta Force series right from the start, intrigued by its unique blend of combat and storytelling. Instead of using traditional cinematic sequences, the narrative unfolded through gameplay itself. The pulse-pounding moments were generated from the chaos of battle situations, scarcity of ammunition, and strategic gameplay, creating a feeling of being a real soldier in the heat of action, rather than a movie star or an arcade character. Liao emphasizes:
Ever since my childhood, I’ve been deeply invested in the Delta Force series, and it holds a special place in my heart as a fan. The initial sensation when I first started playing was as if I had been magically transported into the combat boots of a soldier embarking on a seemingly impossible set of missions.
Let’s discuss the immersive Black Hawk Down game for this simulation. It transported me into the shoes of a soldier, right in that intense battlefield setting – always aware of my situation and ammunition, constantly making decisions amidst numerous options to complete the mission. This game doesn’t resort to edits or cinematics to narrate its story. Instead, as I advance through the mission, it feels like I’m shaping the narrative myself, which is a rare and engaging experience that I haven’t found in other shooter games.
Indeed, today’s version of Delta Force functions as a free-to-play multiplayer shooter with fewer storyline elements compared to traditional campaign shooters. However, this hasn’t deterred the development team from weaving tales. Lately, Delta Force has unveiled a cooperative Black Hawk Down campaign, which mirrors the intensity of its predecessors by plunging a group of players into the infamous Black Hawk Down incident.
Delta Force Preserves the Series’ Best Features

What particularly captivated Liao about the Delta Force was its expansive map layouts. In his time, maps with such open-ended design like the one in 1998’s Delta Force were scarce, and battlefields of this magnitude were mostly found in real-time strategy games viewed from above. Drawing inspiration, Liao admired the open areas and strategic, long-range gameplay presented by Delta Force.
What stood out most to me about games like Black Hawk Down is the vastness and openness of their maps. This was the first time I felt immersed within a map, able to engage other players from afar and employ various strategies. The map’s design allowed for a great deal of exploration and gameplay freedom, which we aim to build upon and enhance in our own project.
TiMi Studios is aiming to carry forward the key elements that made the original Delta Force great – its expansive, non-linear maps, strategic combat, and immersive action experience – while infusing these aspects with a touch of futuristic science fiction in their new version of Delta Force. This way, they hope to honor the legacy of the original game while introducing fresh elements.
