Reloaded” is the fresh addition to Microsoft’s popular series, essentially a revamped version of the initial “Gears of War.” Unlike its predecessor, “Gears of War: Ultimate Edition,” which was exclusive to Xbox and Microsoft Store, “Gears of War: Reloaded” can be played on Steam and PlayStation 5. Although it’s almost identical to previous versions, it boasts technical upgrades designed to bring it in line with contemporary standards. These enhancements include 4K textures, improved controls, HDR support, and the ability to run at up to 120 frames per second in multiplayer modes.
One might assume, considering the simplicity of the remastered version of Gears of War: Reloaded, it would run flawlessly on all devices. However, to everyone’s surprise, on PC, the game encounters several unexpected problems. As of now, Gears of War: Reloaded has a disappointing 50% user score on Steam, with numerous reviewers highlighting its lack of split-screen co-op, limited customization options, frequent graphical glitches, and frequent crashes. Although Microsoft and The Coalition have announced plans to release patches to rectify these issues, they don’t want the next major Gears game to launch as problematically as this one.
It’s important to mention that, just like the PC version of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, the reloaded edition lacks split-screen co-op. However, this feature was only included in the Xbox adaptation of the game.
The Coalition Can’t Let Gears of War: E-Day Have a Launch as Troubled as GoW: Reloaded’s on PC

Unlike GoW: Reloaded, Which Runs on UE3, GoW: E-Day Will Use UE5
In much simpler terms: Much like its original source material, Gears of War: Reloaded operates on an updated variant of Unreal Engine 3. This engine is now over two decades old and isn’t supported anymore by its makers. Although Reloaded appears more visually appealing than most games that previously utilized Unreal Engine 3, it falls short compared to modern titles due to the age-related technical restrictions of the software infrastructure it employs. However, these issues will likely be resolved in Gears of War: E-Day as it plans to utilize the significantly more current Unreal Engine 5.

During the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, the announcement of “Gears of War: E-Day” was accompanied by an interview with The Coalition on the official Xbox website. In this interview, Kate Reynor, Studio Technical Director at The Coalition, shared that “E-Day” will leverage all the cutting-edge capabilities of Unreal Engine 5. Reynor asserted that the game will exhibit over 100 times more environmental and character detail than “Gears 5,” and will showcase advanced next-generation destruction, gore, and animation technology. Furthermore, she stated that with “Gears of War: E-Day,” The Coalition aims to emulate the original “Gears of War” by establishing a new benchmark in technical proficiency.

Unreal Engine 5 Games Have Often Been Plagued by Technical Issues
It’s exciting that Gears of War: E-Day appears poised to be visually impressive, but there might be apprehension among some players about it running on Unreal Engine 5, given that this engine isn’t generally recognized for its optimization. Games like Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater and Black Myth: Wukong, which have also utilized the engine, have experienced numerous technical problems at their launch, particularly on PC platforms. The engine’s capacity to provide breathtaking visuals tends to come at the cost of performance on most systems.
GoW: E-Day Should at Least Be as Polished as GoW 4 and 5 at Launch

Despite an initially rocky debut for Gears of War: Reloaded, The Coalition has generally demonstrated proficiency in managing the Unreal Engine. Hoping that they apply the same level of optimization care and attention to Gears of War: E-Day as they did with Gears of War 4 and 5, which ran smoothly on various platforms including the original Xbox One, despite using UE4 instead of UE5 for those titles.
