In a matter of weeks, gamers will be able to embark on the upcoming installment of the Borderlands series, titled Borderlands 4. This new addition to the looter shooter franchise promises an immersive experience with its expansive open-world setting, encouraging exploration more than ever before. The process of farming bosses for weapons is anticipated to be more efficient and streamlined compared to previous games, while the narrative seems promising, given the introduction of a fresh villain named The Timekeeper. As customary with this franchise, Gearbox Software has already laid out plans for post-release support, as evidenced by the roadmap for Borderlands 4, which hints at significant updates all the way into 2026.
The plan for Borderlands 4 unveils details about both free and premium content offerings. On the free front, gamers can look forward to participating in seasonal events similar to those found in Borderlands 3, along with invincible raid bosses appearing every few months. To keep players engaged, there will be a weekly Wild Card mission, a recurring Big Encore Boss, and Maurice’s Black Market machine featuring rotating items. Paid content includes Bounty Packs, offering Vault Cards, new bosses, and numerous cosmetics, as well as larger story packs with fresh questlines, maps, and more. Two of each are scheduled for release, ensuring plenty of gameplay hours. With a second Season Pass likely for Borderlands 3, the future looks promising. Interestingly, the most intriguing content is only a small part of the roadmap – Pearlescent weapons will become available to all players in Q1 2026.
Pearlescent weapons should not be mixed up with the pink “Seraph” firearms from Borderlands 2, which were deliberately designed to have significant disadvantages that balanced out their impressive statistics, akin to weapons that malfunction or have flaws.
Borderlands 4’s Pearlescent Comeback is a Long Time Coming
Enthusiasts of the Borderlands series have longed for the reintroduction of Pearlescent guns in a new game, given that they last appeared in Borderlands 2, where they were perceived to be underpowered as only The Butcher’s version was particularly sought after. Interestingly, these weapons originated from a glitch in the original Borderlands, where white text overlapped with the orange text of Legendaries, resulting in cyan-colored versions of Legendary weapons. Despite their appearance suggesting they were stronger variants of Legendary guns due to the text color, this was not the case. However, with the release of the Secret Armory of General Knoxx expansion, authentic Pearlescent weapons – also known as Pearlescents – were finally introduced.
As a devoted Borderlands fan, I’ve often found myself immersed in countless hours of battle against the towering Crawmerax the Invincible, the original raid boss. The ultimate goal was to get one of those coveted weapons to drop. For many gamers, including myself, this was no easy feat as the elusive Pearlescents were estimated to have a drop rate between 1/500 and 1/1000.
The rarity of these Pearlescents made them all the more special. Any player who managed to secure one was either extremely lucky, incredibly dedicated, or a combination of both. These weapons weren’t just powerful tools for Vault Hunters; they were a showpiece that we cherished. Their return is something that many fans, myself included, will undoubtedly welcome with excitement.

The information about Pearlescents in Borderlands 4 is scarce, but fans are thrilled that Randy Pitchford’s hint at their return a few months ago has finally been confirmed. What’s certain is that Pearls will be a complimentary addition and incredibly hard to come by. Whether they’ll be as scarce as they were in their initial appearance isn’t clear, but considering Gearbox emphasizing the scarcity of Legendaries in BL4, it can be inferred that they will still be a rare find. Players need not worry about these weapons being more about looks than power. Although the specifics about a unique effect like the cyan guns had in Borderlands 2 are yet to be disclosed, Pearlescents are described as a new loot tier above Legendary, with Gearbox assuring that their power will reflect their rarity.
Borderlands 4 Players Shouldn’t Expect Too Many Pearlescent Weapons to Collect
Players of Borderlands 4 should not anticipate a multitude of Pearl items equivalent to the Legendary loot level, as similar games often introduce only a dozen or fewer cyan weapons across Borderlands 4’s lifespan. In most cases, there was approximately one Pearlescent item to pursue per manufacturer, implying that Borderlands 4 could offer up to eight Pearls to collect. The confirmed manufacturers for Borderlands 4 are as follows:
1. Tediore
2. Jakobs
3. Hyperion
4. Maliwan
5. Vladof
6. Bandit
7. Dahl
8. COV (Crimson Raiders)
- Jakobs
- Maliwan
- Tediore
- Torgue
- Vladof
- Daedeulus
- Order
- Ripper

It’s quite possible that we might find a handful of specialized shield manufacturers adding a Pearlescent option, potentially increasing the total number to at least ten.
Obtaining these rare Pearls, which are difficult to get hold of, will only add to their exclusivity and make them feel even more special. This scarcity could rejuvenate the game in 2026 once players have collected all the best items from the base game. Introducing Pearlescents after the game’s launch is a clever move that keeps the loot fresh before it becomes predictable. As long as they live up to expectations and are as powerful as anticipated, they could significantly impact the game. Although other season pass content for Borderlands 4 looks promising, these Pearlescents and their potential effects could be a real game-changer.
