Summary
- Healers are vital in RPGs like Kingdom Hearts‘ Donald, who can cast powerful spells and heal.
- Unique healers like Shionne in Tales of Arise can also be powerful attackers with sniper rifles.
- Princess Peach in Super Mario RPG showcases offensive abilities along with healing powers.
A healer is a crucial role in both JRPGs (Japanese Role-Playing Games) and other RPGs. As the name implies, they provide aid to the team by casting healing spells and enhancing abilities. Many games offer players the opportunity to assume different roles, such as a standard healer from “Final Fantasy 5” to “Dragon Quest 3: Seeds of Salvation.
In some games, there’s no option to switch character classes, instead roles for party members are pre-assigned. So, I’d like to know, which JRPG healer characters have become iconic and made significant contributions to gaming history? From hilarious scenes to selfless acts, these healers have truly etched their place in the hall of fame.
Donald (Kingdom Hearts)
Duck Amuck
Donald is a key figure among the party members who assists Sora in the adventure of Kingdom Hearts, joined by Goofy. As the group’s mage, he has the ability to conjure his own versions of spells, such as a fire spell, which they call Donald Fire, and a healing spell called Donald Cure.
Donald Cure, being Donald’s sole healing capability, remains a valuable character to have in the party, despite some initial issues with his AI in the first game. Over time, these AI problems were addressed and rectified, resulting in improved functionality. In essence, Sora might not have advanced as far without Donald and Goofy by his side throughout the journey.
Shionne (Tales Of Arise)
Beware Her Scope
In a different phrasing, Shionne hails from the world of Tales of Arise, deviating from the common stereotype of weak female characters often seen in such games. Rather than cowering, she actively works towards change, striving to liberate her homeland from the clutches of monsters and oppressive rulers. What sets her apart among healers in a Japanese Role Playing Game (JRPG) is her unconventional weapon: a sniper rifle. She demonstrates proficiency with this weapon.
In the game “Tales of Arise”, magic is referred to as Artes. Notably, Shionne has abilities that allow her to heal, offer support, and even resurrect party members. However, she’s not just a defensive character; she possesses significant offensive power, boosted by her robust firearm equipment.
Peach (Super Mario RPG)
A Damsel In Distress No More
In many Mario games, Princess Peach finds herself in distressing situations. However, one of her most captivating roles was in the game “Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars” for the SNES. Those who didn’t experience it originally can now enjoy the remake on the Switch, which still retains the original game’s charm and authenticity, adapted for a more modern audience.
In this group, both Peach and the latest character, Mallow, function as healers. However, it’s essential to note that Peach is not merely a healer. She possesses formidable offensive capabilities as well, demonstrated by her ability to hurl Bob-ombs at adversaries. Furthermore, she exhibits a sassy side within the storyline, which adds an interesting dimension to her character.
Flonne (Disgaea: Hour Of Darkness)
An Angel In Disguise
In the game Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, Flonne is dispatched to the underworld as an angel on a mission to vanquish wicked demons. However, she misinterprets the main character, Laharl, as intending harm to her celestial realm. This is simply a case of mistaken identity, as Flonne turns out to be somewhat absent-minded but with good intentions, and she perceives positivity in others – traits that contrast perfectly with Laharl’s perpetual grumpiness.
In this strategic role-playing game for PS2, players have the option to generate common healers, however, when it comes to main characters, Flonne stands out with her exceptional healing and supportive spells. Her abilities extend across multiple grid squares, and she also demonstrates robust offensive capabilities.
Marle (Chrono Trigger)
By Your Powers Combined
In addition to being a princess from the JRPG era on SNES, Marle is also a party member in Chrono Trigger. Among all characters in the game, she stands out as an exceptional healer, striking a harmonious blend of support, healing, and offensive ice-based magical abilities.
Marle can blend her healing abilities with others for Double or Triple Combos, such as Aura Whirl alongside Crono to heal the team, and Lifeline together with Crono and Robo to grant Auto-Life to the party. Though she may initially appear vulnerable, Marle shows courage and does not falter in the face of peril.
Lissa (Fire Emblem: Awakening)
Weak At First, Strong In The End
Awakening game, being Chrom’s sister and part of the main party. Similar to other Cleric characters in the Fire Emblem series, it can be challenging to advance Lissa as she primarily gains levels through healing or attacking, but her attacks are not particularly powerful. However, Lissa has two potential paths for progression: she can evolve into a War Cleric, enhancing her physical strength along with healing abilities, or she can develop into a Sage, gaining mastery over magic. The latter option is generally considered the superior choice for her character development.
In the game “Fire Emblem: Awakening,” one notable feature is that characters can form relationships and have children together. Many fans often decide to pair the player-character, Robin, with Lissa to produce Owain. It’s worth noting that while Lissa initially appears weak and timid, she proves to be an essential party member and significantly strengthens over time.
Yukari (Persona 3 Reload)
An Important Member Of SEES
In all iterations of the game “Persona 3,” including the most recent version “Persona 3 Reload,” the character named Yukari is featured. Each character in the game has a unique entity known as a Persona, and Yukari’s Persona is Io, which can transform into Isis. Regardless of its evolution, Yukari will possess an array of healing abilities, such as Dia, as well as wind-based magical skills like Garu.
In simpler terms, among her companions, she’s not the most powerful fighter, instead favoring a bow like Marle. However, what sets her apart is her exceptional healing abilities, and her character evolution is remarkably deep, notably enhanced in the remake, providing additional layers to her growth within the game.
Aerith (Final Fantasy 7)
Goodness Gracious Great Gospel Of Healing
In essence, players have the flexibility in Final Fantasy 7 to customize their characters into any desired role by using Materia. What sets each character apart is displayed through their unique Limit Breaks, and Aerith’s specialties lie in healing and strengthening abilities. Her most remarkable Limit Break, Great Gospel, not only restores health to the party but also grants Auto-Life, a significant and challenging Limit Break to acquire.
In the original “Final Fantasy 7”, Aerith’s healing skills truly shone, and her character was enjoyable, but her personality received a significant boost in the “Final Fantasy 7 Remake”. Regardless of which version you consider, Aerith consistently ranks among the greatest JRPG healers and characters. Just mentioning her name is enough to make fans understand why she’s so beloved.
