Prey 2 Gameplay Surfaces Online, Showcases Scenes From Cancelled Game

2006 saw the debut of Prey, an extraterrestrial themed first-person shooter, jointly produced by Human Head Studios and 2K Games. This game, which had been under development since the mid-90s, was a significant hit and one of the initial games many gamers experienced on Xbox 360. Soon after its release, a sequel was announced.

Sadly, the release of Prey 2 was called off by Bethesda Softworks in 2014 due to development hurdles that prevented the game from living up to their internal standards. However, a new installation in the series, titled Prey, developed by Arkane Studios, came out in 2017.

Lately, a series of gameplay clips from the shelved Prey 2 have been shared on YouTube by an ex-employee from Human Head Studios.

Cancelled Prey 2 Emerges in Dev-Uploaded Videos

Five videos were posted on YouTube by David Halsted, a designer formerly with Human Head Studios who currently holds the position of Principal Architect at ZeniMax Online Studios.

These videos offer a glimpse into various sequence prototypes, cinematic scenes, and crucially, a ten-minute gameplay preview, giving us an idea of what gameplay from Prey 2 might have looked like if it were ever released.

In 2017, the reboot of Prey didn’t turn out to be exactly what Human Head Studios initially envisioned. Originally planned as a space-themed bounty hunter game that continued from the 2006 version, it instead became a survival horror title with science fiction, mystery, and mind-bending plot twists.

Initially, Prey 2 was envisioned with an expansive open world, but the 2017 version provided a more limited exploration experience centered around a space station that could be divided into multiple zones and levels.

In a statement on the cancellation of Prey 2, Bethesda’s Pete Hines (now retired) explained:

The game we were developing wasn’t reaching the level of success we had hoped for, and it fell short of our quality standards. Consequently, we made the tough decision to discontinue its development. For now, the project has been halted. This decision wasn’t taken lightly, but given that we hadn’t been discussing the game publicly, many may not have been surprised by this news. Human Head Studios is no longer involved in this particular project, but we remain optimistic about our potential to work on this franchise in the future — we just need to identify the right direction for it.

It would be another three years after that comment that the Prey reboot surfaced.

Would you rather have seen the release of Prey 2, or do you prefer the reboot version? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic on the TopMob forum.
