Hideo Kojima Hints That Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain Was ‘Unfinished’

It’s highly probable that Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain marks Hideo Kojima’s final work within the Metal Gear Solid series. After establishing his own production company, Kojima Productions, the renowned director has shared an intriguing social media post, which seems to strengthen a long-held hypothesis.

The Phantom Pain remains an extraordinary installment within the Metal Gear Solid franchise, pushing boundaries with its expansive open-world design and unprecedented freedom to approach MGS missions in creative manners. If you’ve had a chance to play it, you’ll likely agree that while the game presents an incredible experience overall, its closing scenes seem rather abrupt and somewhat incomplete.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain Is An “Unfinished Masterpiece”

Recently, Hideo Kojima has made it clear that he’s moving away from his past projects – he’s not planning to play Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater due to his current focus. Given the popularity of Death Stranding 2, along with his ongoing work on OD and Physint, it’s understandable why he wouldn’t be involved in that game.

According to a post on September 3rd from Kojima, and a subsequent share of an article by Inverse on his X account titled “10 Years Later, Hideo Kojima’s Unfinished Masterpiece Is Still Influencing Games Today,” it appears that Kojima is emphasizing and reinforcing the idea that Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain may have been incomplete at its initial release.

It seems plausible that Kojima is subtly suggesting a theory about an entire final chapter being omitted from The Phantom Pain’s narrative. During the game’s production, there was a well-known rift between Kojima and Konami, leading to some crucial missions and story elements not making it into the final product.

The original Collector’s Edition of The Phantom Pain famously included sketches and clips of an unreleased episode intended to conclude the game’s plotline. To this date, The Phantom Pain is frequently viewed as an incompletely developed game, which is regrettable since it might be the final Kojima-made Metal Gear Solid series material we receive.
