Nintendo Switch 2 Was Delayed Multiple Times, It’s Claimed

Over 150 million units of the original Nintendo Switch have been sold, yet the arrival of its successor seemed to take forever. At times, it almost felt as though the new console would never be announced. Nevertheless, the long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 eventually appeared in the market, though reports suggest that it faced numerous setbacks along the way.

In April 2025, the Nintendo Switch 2 was officially unveiled. After two additional months, the console finally hit the market. As a proud owner of the Nintendo Switch 2, I can assure you it was definitely worth the anticipation. The Mario Kart World is fantastic, and Donkey Kong Bananza is out of this world-not to mention the smooth gameplay experience offered by Pokémon Scarlet and Violet!

But it could’ve all happened a lot sooner had Nintendo not had the eye for inch-perfect detail.

Switch 2 Delayed Because Nintendo Wanted Perfection

Based on reports from Bloomberg, Nintendo delayed the launch of the Switch 2 multiple times due to their designers requiring additional time to finesse the games compatible with the new hardware. This unexpected delay caused some frustration among fans and third-party game publishers, but Nintendo maintained that prioritizing perfection was essential.

Nintendo generally prefers to release games that are fully polished, rather than releasing a nearly complete game and then making numerous updates after its launch to fix issues. This approach carries over to their latest hardware, explaining the extended development time for the Switch 2.

The reason games such as Metroid Prime 4: Beyond require a considerable amount of time for development stems from their complexity, given that they are part of a long-standing franchise like Super Mario and carry the weight of gaming history. To deliver nothing less than exceptional quality, Nintendo is likely investing significant effort to ensure each new iteration lives up to its prestigious past.
