Hollow Knight: Silksong’s New Protagonist Completely Changed DLC Plans

Hollow Knight: Silksong’s DLC plans were tossed out thanks to the new protagonist, Hornet.

Team Cherry’s freshly released game has been in the making for an impressive 7 years, initially conceived as a DLC expansion. However, it expanded beyond expectations, incorporating numerous towns, a complex quest system, and a vast world that dwarfs the original games. Now, the developers have shed light on one key reason behind the game’s extended development period.

Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Hornet Changed Everything for the Developers

In an interview with GamesRadar+, the creators of Team Cherry, Ari Gibson and William Pellen, discussed how Hornet impacted the expansion plans for Hollow Knight: Silksong’s DLC. Pellen noted that “making Hornet taller altered everything,” which led them to decide that a simple DLC wouldn’t be enough to fully develop the new playable character.

As a gamer venturing through Hollow Knight: Silksong, I can personally attest that Hornet’s agility surpasses the previous protagonist. She leaps higher, dashes faster, scales ledges with ease, and her movements are downright acrobatic. This means the caves need to grow taller to keep up with her newfound height. Her swift combat style has also influenced the enemy designs, making the core of this world a reflection of her speed and prowess. Hornet’s essence is mirrored in the way the game world is structured, revealing more about her character and nature with each step I take.

In Hornet’s world, she could effortlessly navigate the potential dangers, as her maneuverability is exceptional. Additionally, an altered attack range would significantly impact the scenario. Conversely, Silksong emphasizes a more aggressive playstyle, with swift action, strategic choices, and taking the initiative.

Gibson further explained that Hornet possesses a half-insect nature, a trait that not only gives the character a tangible feel, but also affects the overall setting. In other words, players can expect fewer ethereal orbs, fewer magical flashes of light, and more blades and traps instead.
