It seems that the debut of Hollow Knight: Silksong on September 4 overwhelmed most digital retailers, causing significant outages on platforms such as the Xbox Store, Steam, and Nintendo eShop at the exact time of the sequel’s release. Although some enthusiasts have successfully started playing Hollow Knight: Silksong on their chosen platforms, many encountered a major disappointment while attempting to download the game, as most prominent online gaming marketplaces experienced downtime.
2025 had been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Hollow Knight: Silksong, as the highly-anticipated indie game delayed the release of over a dozen other games. The success and hype surrounding Silksong has been so significant that even some larger developers like Devolver Digital postponed their own title, Baby Steps. Originally set for release on PlayStation 5 and Steam on September 8, the launch of Baby Steps has now been moved to September 23, in order to avoid clashing with Silksong.
Hollow Knight: Silksong Causes Major Storefront Outages
The revelation about the launch date of “Hollow Knight: Silksong” was just two weeks ago, yet with fans eagerly anticipating the sequel for eight years, excitement for the game had already peaked to unprecedented levels. In fact, its debut has reportedly caused the Xbox Store, Steam, and Nintendo eShop to crash, as per Insider Gaming. At 7 AM PT / 10 AM ET / 3 PM BST today, September 4, “Silksong” was digitally released for players worldwide. Since there won’t be a physical version available until 2026, the only means to enjoy “Silksong” at present is by downloading it online, which seems to account for the massive outage on most major retail platforms when it went live.

It’s great news that these stores have reopened and seem to be functioning again. However, it’s not unlikely that additional complications may arise as time goes by. In just under an hour, SteamDB reports that “Silksong” has surpassed 103,000 concurrent players on Steam, a significant number indeed. To help you understand better, the original “Hollow Knight” consistently broke its own record for concurrent players leading up to the release of “Silksong.” On September 3, the day before the sequel launched, “Hollow Knight” boasted nearly 73,000 concurrent players on the platform.

Enthusiasts waiting to purchase one of this year’s top games will find a great deal as the title is currently priced at just $19.99 USD, a steal considering the escalating costs of video games. What’s more, Hollow Knight: Silksong is now accessible on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, meaning subscribers to Microsoft’s premium service can download and play it for free.
