This list contains spoilers for the One Piece anime
In the captivating universe of One Piece, consuming a Devil Fruit often aligns with the user’s personality or combat style, but exceptions do occur. Though infrequent, various characters in the series have acquired fruits that don’t seem to perfectly fit their abilities or character traits. Despite the appeal of a potent fruit offering an advantage in battles, there are undoubtedly some who might have wished for a slightly different fruit than what they received in life.
There are numerous explanations why some One Piece characters might appear incongruous with their respective Devil Fruit abilities. Perhaps it’s due to the peculiar and eccentric nature of these characters, or because their powers are too risky for combat situations, or even because their abilities seem largely ineffective for them as individuals. This is particularly noticeable in the following powerful characters who, given their personalities, seem like they should have been granted a different Devil Fruit.
7. Kin’emon
Devil Fruit: Garb Garb Fruit
- Devil Fruit Type: Paramecia
Initially, one might expect that Kin’emon, the renowned samurai, would have a Devil Fruit that boosts his combat strength or resilience. However, quite unexpectedly, he obtained a fruit with an unusual ability – it enables him to swiftly create new outfits not only for himself but also for his allies. Though this skill has proven beneficial in several instances, such as when it facilitated the Straw Hats’ infiltration of Onigashima, it seems more suited for a fashion designer or someone with a keen interest in style rather than Kin’emon.
For most part of the tale, Kine’mon’s primary goal was freeing his homeland Wano from the grip of Kaido and Orochi. Given that his Devil Fruit’s abilities seemed unrelated to him or his character, he initially considered it less effective for his mission. However, upon meeting the Straw Hats, he discovered potential ways to utilize its powers, despite the fact that it would be more suited to someone whose profession or personality revolved around the fashion industry.
6. Fujitora
Devil Fruit: Press Press Fruit
- Devil Fruit Type: Paramecia
As a marine enthusiast, I can’t help but admire Admiral Fujitora among his peers. Unlike some others in the Marines, he stands out as the most honorable and respectable of the bunch. While he undeniably pursues pirates, it’s important to note that he isn’t a bloodthirsty warrior who indiscriminately annihilates pirate crews for sport – though his Devil Fruit grants him an overwhelming power to do just that.
By harnessing the ability to manipulate gravity itself, Fujitora possesses a devastating capacity: he can obliterate entire areas in mere seconds by raining down objects from the sky upon them, resulting in destruction on a massive scale. Yet, even with this formidable power at his command, Fujitora chooses to use it judiciously and sparingly. He’s truly a testament to the idea that strength and honor can coexist within one person.
In the movie “One Piece Stampede“, there’s a clear demonstration of this concept when Fujitora summons a blazing meteorite that nearly levels the entire region. Only Zoro, with his swift swordplay, manages to divide it. It’s logical that as an Admiral, Fujitora would possess a powerful Devil Fruit. However, the Press Press fruit seems excessively destructive and disorderly for someone as sensible as its user.
5. X Drake
Devil Fruit: Dragon Dragon Fruit, Model: Allosaurus
- Devil Fruit Type: Zoan
In the narrative, X Drake is unveiled as a member of the enigmatic Worst Generation of pirates, yet conceals his true affiliation with SWORD, an undercover Marine unit, for most of the story. To maintain discretion and prevent scrutiny, given his covert spy mission role, Drake often operates in stealth when appearing within the story. However, his Devil Fruit abilities don’t seem to align with this stealthy approach.
When Drake utilizes his Fruit’s power, he transforms into an imposing Allosaurus, causing everyone nearby to take notice due to his towering size and unique appearance. Given that Drake is meant to evade attention rather than seek it, he only displays his complete Zoan form sparingly throughout the series.
4. Pekoms
Devil Fruit: Turtle Turtle Fruit
- Devil Fruit Type: Zoan
In the world of “One Piece,” an assortment of peculiar Devil Fruits have appeared, and among them, the Turtle Turtle Fruit possessed by Pekoms stands out as remarkably unusual. Given its name, this fruit imparts upon Pekoms, who is already a Mink with animalistic traits, the ability to develop a protective shell on his back, similar to that of a turtle. He frequently utilizes this feature to dodge attacks from behind by numerous adversaries, yet it seems questionable if this fruit aligns perfectly with the role of one of Big Mom’s trusted advisors.
It would be ideal if Pekoms had a fruit that could either gather data or enhance his combat skills against intruders on Whole Cake Island, making his role more useful for Big Mom. However, since his ability seems to solely benefit himself, it’s a bit puzzling why Oda, the creator, chose this Devil Fruit for such a lovable Mink character.
3. Katakuri
Devil Fruit: Mochi Mochi Fruit
- Devil Fruit Type: Special Paramecia
As a devoted fan, I must say that most of Big Mom’s offspring embody the carefree spirit of pirates, their unique food-related abilities seemingly tailored to each one. However, Katakuri stands out as an exception – he’s not your typical jovial pirate. In fact, he exudes a dangerous air of seriousness and stoicism that sets him apart. When we first encountered this imposing figure, I bet many fans, like me, were surprised to learn that his Devil Fruit grants him control over soft and fluffy mochi – an ability quite unlike anything we’d imagined for such a formidable opponent!
Although it may seem unusual, Katakuri has remarkably harnessed the power of his Devil Fruit to become an extraordinarily formidable pirate, even mastering its Awakening ability, which posed significant challenges for Luffy. Interestingly, Katakuri might have preferred a fruit more suited to his personality, but within the narrative, it’s evident that he has wholeheartedly adopted and utilized his mochi fruit in combat.
2. Vander Decken
Devil Fruit: Mark Mark Fruit
- Devil Fruit Type: Paramecia
In my observation, among characters who unfortunately misuse their Devil Fruit abilities, Vander Decken stands out prominently. Equipped with the Mark-Mark Fruit, he possesses an intriguing power that allows him to throw any projectile of his choice, which will then relentlessly pursue anyone he has previously marked, regardless of their hiding place.
This seemingly valuable ability would be a great asset for a marine in tracking down a specific pirate. However, instead of utilizing it for such noble purposes, Vander Decken chooses to employ it in an attempt to harm Princess Shirahoshi, driven by resentment due to her rejection of his affections.
It seems as though this power is more suited for someone with greater strength and maturity than Vander Decken, given his apparent underutilization of it. As a transient member of Hody’s crew, one would expect Vander Decken to possess a fruit granting enhanced close-combat abilities due to his preference for machetes and knives. However, the fact that he wields one of the best long-range abilities in the series seems somewhat incongruous, considering the nature of the combat scenarios he typically encounters.
1. Foxy
Devil Fruit: Slow Slow Fruit
- Devil Fruit Type: Paramecia
The primary reason Foxy appears unusual as the chosen character to consume the Mighty Slow Fruit is due to its exceptional strength, which contrasts significantly with its user. Given that possessing the ability to slow down an adversary is highly desirable among Marines and pirates alike, it seems somewhat unexpected for such a potent item to be consumed by a lowly thug who merely uses it for amusement, instead of strategic advantage. This situation feels slightly incongruous.
Apart from his ineptitude at utilizing the fruit, it’s also worth noting that Foxy struggles significantly with it. This was evident when Luffy managed to return the ability to him merely by using a mirror. It wouldn’t be surprising if it turned out that Foxy’s Devil Fruit had more of a comedic or whimsical nature. However, given his weakness and forgettable nature as captain of the Foxy Pirates, such a powerful ability appears incongruous.
