Changes & Tweaks Silksong Could Use

It’s hardly surprising that Hollow Knight: Silksong, which has been developed over the course of six years, is performing exceptionally well across all platforms. The Steam version, in particular, stands out due to its integrated analytics, making it easier to track. With around half a million people playing it, it was the highlight of the recent weekend and is expected to continue generating buzz for weeks or even months ahead.

Let’s discuss potential improvements for ‘Hollow Knight: Silksong’ that Team Cherry might address through updates, aimed at enhancing player experience and steering discussions toward even more favorable opinions. Some aspects of the game, despite its overall excellence-and arguably surpassing ‘Hollow Knight’-have sparked debates among fans regarding difficulty level and certain functionalities that could use refinement.

The Ability To Copy Saves

Insurance For The Corrupt

In the game, each player receives access to four storage spaces where they can save their progress at will. However, it’s important to note that these saved games cannot be copied within the game itself. This function of being able to copy files is often used by players as a form of insurance against potential glitches or errors in the game.

Restoring saved games could also be beneficial here, and I’m sure the players would appreciate this improvement. Encountering a game-halting glitch is never enjoyable; it might require restarting the game or waiting for an update that might not even arrive.

Infinite Shell Shards

If It Works For Rosaries…

In Hollow Knight: Silksong, players have the freedom to carry an unlimited number of Rosaries since they serve as the primary currency in the game. Conversely, Shell Shards function as a secondary currency, primarily used for reloading ammo. Initially, players are limited to 400 Shell Shards, but methods exist for expanding this capacity.

It seems illogical to restrict the number of Shell Shards when there’s no limit on how many Rosaries a player can carry. Therefore, it would be great if Team Cherry could allow players to carry an unlimited quantity of both items, should they prefer that option.

Damage Received

Should Normal Enemies Really Do More Than One Spot Of Damage?

In the game “Hollow Knight: Silksong,” this update is quite debated due to the enemies dealing more damage than in its predecessor, “Hollow Knight.” The majority of adversaries now eliminate one health unit, but some can take out two health points, making exploration trickier and a return to a boss fight particularly grueling.

In simpler terms, the current damage dealt by enemies in Hollow Knight is quite high compared to what most bosses in the game have, and with just 5 health points at the beginning, players can easily perish. Reducing the damage from enemies could significantly improve the game’s balance.

Show Enemy Health

It’ll Give Players A Better Idea Of What They’re Up Against

A new concern related to health mechanics has surfaced among players, who feel that enemy health is too high. However, the primary problem isn’t about absorbing excessive damage. Instead, there’s a desire for a visible health bar, similar to Hollow Knight: Silksong’s various tools, to help measure the amount of damage inflicted on enemies. This feature was absent in the original game as well.

Offering a health meter in Hollow Knight: Silksong could provide players with valuable insights about whether they should continue their offensive or retreat cautiously during gameplay. Just like challenging games such as Dark Souls, having an enemy’s health bar visible would greatly enhance the gaming experience.

Turn Off Powers

Platform How You Like

Similar to many Metroidvania games, Hollow Knight: Silksong offers players a variety of movement skills. However, some players might prefer not to have these skills activated constantly.

Allowing players to toggle specific features on and off within the menu could provide a more personalized gameplay experience. For instance, while the Drifter’s Cloak enables gliding, it might sometimes hinder Hornet’s ability to grab ledges during this movement, unlike when she performs an air dash, where she can latch onto surfaces.

Checkpoints Before Bosses

Temporary Save Points

One of the toughest parts about playing Silksong isn’t fighting the bosses themselves, but rather finding your way back to them. Often, resting spots (benches) are placed far from a boss fight, and sometimes the path back is filled with traps, enemies, or both.

Silksong, referred to as The Last Judge, involves a difficult journey back to the arena from the nearest resting spot. This long trek can be frustrating for players. To ease this frustration, Team Cherry could introduce temporary checkpoints that allow players to restart from within the boss arena, but only after they’ve entered and cannot leave until they choose to restart.

Dash Through Enemies

A Swift Step Upgrade

Despite their challenging nature, Soulslike games often equip players with a dodge mechanism, offering a brief period of invincibility against enemy assaults. Players can evade attacks by jumping or, as seen in Hollow Knight: Silksong, they can employ the Swift Step move to swiftly dash beneath enemies.

Instead of having the option to dash through enemies, they are unable to do so. Introducing this ability could enrich combat and even simplify encounters with certain bosses, making them less challenging. Yet, it remains an appealing feature that players might hope to see addressed in a future update.

Add A Map Zoom

Give Players A Closer Look At The World

In Hollow Knight: Silksong, you have two methods to explore maps. Initially, you can press the L button on your Nintendo Switch 2 controller or use the Left Bumper on PS5/Xbox controllers to display the current area map. Alternatively, by navigating to the options menu and selecting the full map, you can then zoom into specific areas for a closer look.

Although the map doesn’t allow for a full magnification to examine detailed areas such as individual rooms more closely, even when you press your eye against the glass, a zoom feature would be beneficial for a better exploration experience. It may seem like a minor adjustment, but its inclusion could significantly improve navigation.
