In the game titled “Hollow Knight,” the main character, referred to simply as The Knight, is quite formidable despite his diminutive size. Never make the mistake of underestimating a tiny monarch! Adorned with a large headpiece, cloak, and his faithful nail weapon, fans have taken an instant liking to The Knight for his role as the protagonist in the Metroidvania genre.
From the outset of “Hollow Knight: Silksong,” it’s clear that Hornet stands apart. To begin with, she towers over The Knight, and her cloak boasts a more defined shape. Moreover, her weapon – a needle – extends further. However, this doesn’t make her superior; instead, in the sequel, Hornet demonstrates abilities that The Knight can’t, which certain players might find more appealing from a gameplay standpoint.
Some gameplay features will be spoiled, but no story/world spoilers will be included.
She Communicates With Others
The Biggest Difference

The hornet now has the ability to speak, which marks a significant shift in narrative compared to many games where the main character is typically mute in the sequel, with titles like “Dead Space 2” and “Jak 2” being notable instances of protagonists who can talk.
In the game Hollow Knight: Silksong, Hornet serves as another fine instance of a character capable of conversation. This feature adds depth to the narrative for players, as unlike traditional heroes who merely listen to others talk without expressing feelings or reciprocating responses, Hornet can interact with non-player characters (NPCs), making the story more immersive and interactive.
Using A Cocoon For Safety
No Need To Fight Yourself

In the game “Hollow Knight”, when the character The Knight perishes, they leave behind a Remnant of their old self for players to vanquish again in order to regain their Geo. This is a common mechanic called a corpse run, which can be found in many other games. Unlike The Knight, Hornet in “Hollow Knight: Silksong” doesn’t die but rather secures her prized possessions within a cocoon and recedes to battle another day. She proves to be a more skilled combatant compared to the previous character.
When fans think about how she manages to survive despite losing numerous fights, many imagine it’s due to her exceptional skill with Silk, which grants her the ability to create cocoons – a testament to her elegance and refinement, qualities that The Knight apparently does not possess.
Run Like The Wind
A Basic But Genuine Feature

Silksong.
Yet, persistently pressing the sprint key triggers Hornet to run at a faster pace. Certain items called Trinkets can boost this speed even further. In a dash-off against The Knight, there’s no doubt that Hornet would be the swift winner.
Float Like A Princess
Jets Vs Balloons

One delightful aspect of “Super Mario Bros. 2” was Princess Peach’s floating ability, embodied by her dress, a trait that has since become synonymous with her character. It’s unclear if this was intentional or not, but “Hollow Knight: Silksong” shares similarities in that it includes a gliding mechanic. In the expansive regions of “Hollow Knight: Silksong”, Hornet can upgrade her cloak to the Drifter’s Cloak, allowing her to float for extended periods. Additionally, by catching air currents, she’ll be propelled upward at great speeds.
In the game Hollow Knight, the character most similar to The Knight’s abilities is the Crystal Heart. Much like how The Knight rockets forward when he performs this move, even traversing between screens, the Crystal Heart has a similar propulsion mechanism. However, Hornet lacks such an ability, making it somewhat of a tie in terms of mobility. It would have been an interesting addition if The Knight could utilize his cloak for gliding throughout Hollownest instead.
Play Music With The Needolin
The Needle Is More Than A Weapon

In the game “Hollow Knight: Silksong,” Hornet begins with a Needle as her weapon, while the Knight carries a Nail. Primarily, the Knight uses his Nail for attacking, but Hornet will acquire abilities to transform her Needle into something more than just an attack tool. Initially, Hornet obtains musical power through the Needolin upgrade, allowing her to play her Needle like a harp. This music can open doors that have been sealed with a magical song.
The game teaches players to employ the Needolin in the usual way, yet it has an additional covert function. When paired with specific characters, they will join Hornet in song when she plays the Needolin. Moreover, some corpses will manifest their ghostly presence through singing. Although the Knight can interact with dreams and the spirit realm, he cannot transform his Nail into a musical instrument like a guitar.
Taunt Your Enemies
Provoke Foes Into Traps

In the game Hollow Knight: Silksong, there’s a hidden control that not many players are aware of. Unlike other game mechanics, this one isn’t explicitly communicated. To illustrate with an example, using the Switch 2, you can taunt Hornet’s enemies by pressing inward on the right joystick. This action consumes some Silk, and in return, enemies will be attracted towards Hornet.
Silksong”.
The Clawline Hookshot
Another New Use For The Needle

In the game “Hollow Knight: Silksong,” players will eventually acquire a new upgrade for Hornet called Clawline. This feature functions similarly to an extra dash, propelling Hornet forward, and also enables her to cling to certain decorative rings in the environment. Unlike the Knight in “Hollow Knight,” Hornet does not possess any grappling hook-like abilities. The Clawline is another skill that makes Hornet and her Needle more formidable compared to the Knight.
In Hollow Knight, despite The Knight triumphing over another character, Hornet, it’d be intriguing to observe a battle between them without player involvement. With Hornet acquiring new abilities like Clawline, she might have the power to outmatch The Knight in every stoic moment of his silent victory.
